ThunderWolves battle between ranked opponents ends in draw

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 22, 2023) - In a battle of two ranked teams featuring No. 5 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer and No. 18 Colorado Mesa, the teams played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday on Senior Day at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

"Proud of the boys effort today. We did everything we needed to do and put in a top performance. We gave up very few opportunities and created some good chances," said Pack Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees. "We will keep fighting together to achieve our goals."

Facing their fourth ranked opponent of the season, CSU Pueblo on paper outplayed Colorado Mesa on the offensive side, earning 19 total shots, guided by Shjon Andrews (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) with four shots.

The ThunderWolves defense held the Mavericks to six shots in the game and two shots on goal.

Andrews led all players in shots and Gabriel Campora (Sr., Saltillo, Mexico) along with Kenshin Uneo (Sr., Hyoga, Japan) both recorded three shots. Five other players fired at least one shot for the Pack.

The first half was a back-and-forth contest with the ThunderWolves registering ten shots against six from CMU.

CSU Pueblo doubled CMU on the number of corners earned in the first forty-five minutes of action.

In the second period, the Pack came out of the gates the more aggressive team and quickly drove the ball into Mavericks territory and made four shots and earned two corners in the first ten minutes of the half.

The ThunderWolves best look in the second half came during the 79th minute when Andrews climbed the defense on a corner and got a header on the ball that sailed just above the crossbar.

In the 83rd minute, Jack Pascoe (Barry, Wales) fired the final shot on goal of the match that was saved by CMU goalkeeper Diego Chavez.

Pack goalkeeper Tristan Whitlock (So., Lincoln, Neb.) made two saves against six shots and two SOG to earn the draw.

After the match, CSU Pueblo recognized its departing players who will finish their careers with the Pack at the end of the season.

CSU Pueblo (11-3-2, 5-2-1 RMAC) will finish the regular season this week on the road with matches Thursday at Regis and Sunday at South Dakota Mines.
