Football Wins Fourth Straight, Earns Hard-Fought 28-3 Victory at Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. – Colorado State University Pueblo extended its win streak to four straight games here Saturday afternoon as the ThunderWolves collected a hard-fought 28-3 victory over Chadron State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play in Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium.
 
With the victory, the Pack improves to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC, while Chadron State falls to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the leage. The win was also the 14th straight in the series over the Eagles as CSU Pueblo is now 14-1 all-time against Chadron State on the gridiron.

"I am proud of our offense and defense. We were able to take make some big plays on offense and our defense was able to cause some turnovers and get off the field on third down," CSU Pueblo head football coach Philip Vigil said after the game. "This is a hard place to come and play. This was a good football team we just played. I was proud of guys today for their fight."
 
Saturday's game was about big plays for the Pack offense as all four of their scores came on plays of 32 or more yards, including its first two scores of the game in the first half coming on passing plays of 82 and 77 yards.
 
For the game, the Pack finished with 480 yards of offense as they passed for a season high 368 yards and added 112 yards on the ground with 90 of those rushing yards coming in the second half as they had just 24 yards rushing in the first half against an Eagle defense that entered the game allowing just 117.9 rushing yards per game.
 
Graduate student quarterback Chance Fuller (Arlington, Texas/Fort Hays State) completed 70.6 percent of his passes as he finished the game 24-for-34 passing for a season-high 368 yards and had three touchdowns and did not throw an interception on the day. His three touchdown passes pushed his season total to 21 and his career total to 88, which is fourth among active Division II players.
 
Junior receiver Reggie Retzlaff (Corona, Calif./Riverside City College) caught five of those passes for a season high 165 yards and added two more touchdown receptions to bring his season total to 10, which is fifth-most in a single season in school history.
 
In addition to Retzlaff, redshirt junior receiver Andrew Cook (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Prep) added six receptions for 57 yards and redshirt sophomore Zach Rakowsky (Loveland, Colo./Loveland) caught four passes for 94 yards and added a touchdown reception.
 
Junior running back Kiahn Martinez (Denver, Colo./University of Idaho) led the way on the ground with 60 yards rushing on 13 carries, while junior running back Howard Russell (Phoenix, Ariz./Eastern New Mexico) added 46 yards on 12 carries.
 
The Pack jumped in front 7-0 with 5:11 left in the opening quarter on a 82-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to Retzlaff. That touchdown pass came on the Pack's ninth offensive play of the game.
 
CSU Pueblo jumped in front 14-0 thanks to a 77-yard touchdown reception from Fuller to Rakowsky. The touchdown came one play after redshirt junior Eli Pittman (Peoria, Ariz./Liberty) picked off a pass from CSC quarterback Preston Pearson at the CSU Pueblo 23-yard line.
 
Pittman's interception was the second of the game for the Pack as redshirt junior Jon Nuschy (La Junta, Colo./Northern Colorado) on the Eagles first possession as they drove 58 yards to the CSU Pueblo 22-yard line. Redshirt junior defensive back Daniel Bone III (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) added an interception in the third quarter.
 
Retzalff gave the Pack a 21-0 lead thanks to a 44-yard touchdown reception from Fuller just 74 seconds into the third quarter. The touchdown reception was the second of the game and 10th of the season for Retzlaff.
 
Junior running back Kiahn Martinez (Denver, Colo./University of Idaho) gave the Pack a 28-0 lead following a 32-yard touchdown run with 9:09 left in the third quarter.
 
The Pack had a chance to tack on an additional three points midway through the third quarter but 44-yard field goal attempt by junior kicker Jacob Willig (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) was blocked.
 
CSC, who finished the game with 320 yards of offense, prevented a shutout by the Pack defense thanks to a 32-yard field goal by Wilson Yee with 2:48 left in the game.
 
On the day, the Pack defense allowed 101 yards rushing and 219 yards passing, but they collected a season-high three interceptions and had two sacks. In addition, they held Eagles to 3-of-12 on third down attempts.
 
The Pack offensive line did not allow a sack and did not commit a turnover in the win.
 
Bone paced the Pack defense with 16 tackles, including seven solo stops and added an interception. Nuschy added eight tackles and an interception. Junior defensive lineman Makeah Scippio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Harrison) had one of the Pack's two sacks and also had 1.5 tackles for loss, while junior linebacker Noa Purcell (Kalihi, Hawaii/Riverside City College) had the other sack in the game. 
 
Pearson finished the game 19-for-30 passing for 220 yards and had three interceptions. Tommy Thomas caught eight of those 19 Pearson passes for 73 yards, but was held out of the end zone. He entered the game with eight touchdown receptions on the season.
 
The Eagles ground game was paced by an 89-yard performance from Jake Marschall.
 
CSU Pueblo will look to make it five straight wins next Saturday, Oct. 23 as they play host to Colorado Mesa at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl. Kickoff for Saturday's Breast Cancer Awareness game is scheduled 1 p.m.
