ThunderWolves wrap Steel City Showcase with pair of wins

PUEBLO, Colo. (Sept. 3, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo volleyball squad earned a pair of shutout victories Saturday, wrapping up play at the 2022 Steel City Showcase against Davis & Elkins and ending the weekend against Cal State Monterey Bay.

In the two matches, Payton Van Veen recorded double-digit kills and Sabrina King earned 37 total assists to lead the way.

Davis & Elkins Recap
The Pack recorded a season-high .366 hitting percentage and were led by Van Veen's 11 kills and .478 hitting mark. Josey Nunn finished the match with nine kills.

King set a season-high 22 assists and defensively, Jazzy Espinoza stood tall at the net and was in on six blocks.

As a team, the Pack dished out 10 service aces.

Cal State Monterey Bay Recap
In the weekend finale against Monterey Bay, Van Veen hammered down 12 more kills and Hannah Delor chipped in eight kills.

The duo of King and Grace Hern accounted for 18 assists and 15 assists, respectively.

Starting out the match, CSU Pueblo started slow out of the gate. In the first set, the Pack went ahead early and held a 12-9 lead before the Otters went on a  5-run and took a 14-12 advantage.

CSU Pueblo regained the lead later in the set and went on a 5-0 run themselves for a 22-19 lead before Monterey Bay called a timeout. The teams exchanged points until the Pack held a three-point lead when the Otters scored consecutive points and got within one before the Pack mustered out a 25-23 win after an attack error.

In set two, both teams recorded multiple point streaks with the ThunderWolves getting a three-point swing late in the set that put them in front of the Otters 24-20 before a finishing kill by Nunn ended the set.

By the third set, CSU Pueblo found the energy that helped to break a 9-9 tie and a big 8-0 run that followed.

At serve, King did her part in keeping the Otters guessing and frazzled as the ThunderWolves built a 17-9 lead before the visitors had a side out.

With the lead, CSU Pueblo's offense was able to put the match away with another mini 3-point run and a 25-14 set win.
