GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (Sept. 23, 2022) - No. 15 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against the same opponent they faced just five days ago in Colorado Mesa and beat the Mavericks, 1-0 at CMU's Community Hospital Unity Field.
With the win, the ThunderWolves have won a season-high four games in a row.
Matt Coleman scored the only goal of the game during the 80th minute for the Pack.
In the match, CSU Pueblo totaled 14 shots on offense with five going on frame and defensively, the stingy Pack defense limited the Mavericks to four shots in the match, two in each half and one of those shots landed on goal.
"Another impressive performance. To keep a clean sheet against a top program at their place is a great achievement," said Pack Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "We stayed together and kept fighting and trying to play the game in their half (of the pitch)."Â
"What a goal by Matt. He has battled back from injury and to score the winner is fitting for his team first attitude."
During the first half, CSU Pueblo started fast out of the gate and recorded the first shot off the match off the foot of
Caio Oliveira, two and a half minutes into the game. CSU Pueblo's offense earned the first of two corners in the first period at the three minute mark.
CSU Pueblo's
Gabriel Campora recorded his first shot on goal during the 9th minute of action, causing CMU goalkeeper Connor Durant to dive and make the save.
The ThunderWolves offense continued to attack and managed four more shots midway through the first half including a shot by
Aden O'Hara that sailed high above the crossbar.
At halftime, the CSU Pueblo offense fired nine shots against two from CMU. The Pack earned two of their three corners in the game, during the first period.
In the final period, the ThunderWolves back line and play at midfield stepped up to the occasion and shut down any potential scoring threat. The Pack allowed one shot on goal.
At the net,
Nils Roth faced four shots and made save. Roth was able to stand tall for much of the game.
Twelvetrees added, "Nils made some big saves and his calmness and leadership was next level for us today. We all remembered the RMAC Tournament Final here and the win was a special moment for the Pack."
CSU Pueblo (7-2) will next travel and face Westminster on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Salt Lake City.
