PUEBLO, Colo. (Sept. 18, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team extended its win streak to three games for a second time this season after defeating No. 10 Colorado Mesa 2-1 on Sunday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
With the win, the ThunderWolves completed a tough two matches at home with two victories over Colorado School of Mines on Friday and with the win Sunday over the Mavericks.
In the match,
Shjon Andrews and
Ricardo Schroeder Jr. both tallied goals. Andrews connected on a header goal during the 38th minute and Schroeder Jr. was able to get his goal during the 44th minute right before intermission.
The ThunderWolves outshot CMU 11-6 in the game and earned ten corner kicks in the match.
CSU Pueblo's offense was led by
Gabriel Campora who finished with a game-high three shots including one on goal.
The Pack carried the 2-1 lead into halftime and relied heavily on the play by the midfielders and another strong outing by the back defensive line helped in the victory.
Pack goalkeeper
Nils Roth allowed one goal during the 30th minute when CMU was awarded a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead.Â
The ThunderWolves did not hang their heads and quickly became the dominant team on the pitch.
The total fouls count reached 24 combined with the ThunderWolves getting 16 of those called against them.
Despite that fact, CSU Pueblo continued to be the first to every loose ball and physical when they needed.
Roth finished with one save and face three shots on goal.
"Phenomenal effort from the team today," said Pack Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "We came back from a goal down and showed our character. We dominated physically and executed consistently against a Top 10 team."
Twelvetrees added, "Very happy for Shjon who has overcome so much in his career here to prove he is an elite defender and scores his second goal of the season. Our front line was very difficult to manage today with Gabo (Campora), Mario (Sandoval), Aden (O'Hara), and Caio (Oliveira) all causing many problems with their energy and pressing."
CSU Pueblo (6-2) will face the same Mavericks squad in their next match Friday to begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The ThunderWolves and CMU will kickoff at 7 p.m. at the Mavericks' Community Hospital Unity Field.
