CSU Pueblo secures win over Fort Lewis in RMAC opener

PUEBLO, Colo. (Sept. 16, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer team began Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 victory over Fort Lewis on Friday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

Porsche Nieto scored during the 33rd minute of the first half for the Pack after following through on a rebounded ball and hit a shot high and into the back of the net.

Victoria Mitrick was credited with an assist after she fired a shot that ricocheted off the goalkeeper to Nieto.

In the match, CSU Pueblo totaled ten shots with five landing on goal and recorded two corners.

Through the first twenty minutes of the game, the Pack relied on the strong play at midfield and from the back line to fend off the FLC attack before settling in.

During the last half of the first period, the ThunderWolves offense came alive and earned possession in Skyhawks territory, causing FLC to go on the defense.

Ahead of the goal, the Pack shot two times at the net with the third time being the charm for Nieto and the Pack.

At intermission CSU Pueblo held a 6-5 shots lead.

The second half was a defensive battle with the ThunderWolves coming out unscathed. In the period, CSU Pueblo held Fort Lewis to two shots in the period.

Freshman Ashley Bennett led all players with three shots in the game.

At goalkeeper, Breanna Encinas earned the shutout and made four saves including two big diving catches in the second half to preserve the lead.

CSU Pueblo (2-5, 1-0 RMAC) remains at home and will host Western Colorado on Sunday at 3 p.m. Ahead of the women's game, the Pack men's soccer squad will take on No. 10 Colorado Mesa at noon, both matches at Gonzales Stadium.
