Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

ThunderWolves stampede past Orediggers

PUEBLO, Colo. (Sept. 15, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team was clicking on all cylinders Thursday in a 4-0 shutout win over Colorado School of Mines in a nonconference match at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

CSU Pueblo scored all of its goals in the second half and all was scored during a 20-minute span. Gabriel Campora totaled five points in the game and scored his Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference leading seventh and eighth goals and added one assist in the winning effort for the ThunderWolves.

Mario Sandoval earned his way into the box score and chipped in three points, scoring a goal and an assist. Caio Oliveira polished the scoring off with a shot from beyond the 18-yard box that sailed into the upper third of the net.

In the match, CSU Pueblo made 19 shots and had majority of those attempts land on frame.

After the first half, the Pack and Orediggers went into the locker room in a scoreless affair despite the ThunderWolves recording eight shots against three by Mines.

The Pack started the match playing aggressive which sparked the offense to tally a pair of shots and get a corner kick all within the opening minutes of play.

During the first 15 minutes, CSU Pueblo continued to dominate possession and earned three shots.

Throughout the first half, the Pack front line created multiple chances and thanks to the strong play from the back line and at midfield, the ThunderWolves were able to keep Mines from any scoring threat.

In the second half, CSU Pueblo matched the intensity from the first period. During the 54', Campora single handedly drove the ball from midfield ahead of the center back, causing the defender to draw a foul inside the penalty box.

As a result, Mines had to play one-man down for the remainder of the match.

Campora connected on his attempt, striking the net high and under the crossbar to give the Pack a 1-0 lead.

Moments late, the strong play on the defensive side resulted in a turnover that led to Sandoval serving in a pass inside the box to Campora who hit a one-timer for a 2-0 Pack lead.

A short three minutes elapsed before CSU Pueblo again caused a turnover and Campora took the ball and dished in a pass to Sandoval who finished with his first goal of the season.

With about 16 minutes left in regulation, Ricardo Schroeder Jr. kicked in a ball ahead for Oliveira to score his third goal of the year.

The goalkeeper duo of Nils Roth and Will Whitworth combined for the fourth clean sheet of the season. Roth made two saves in just over 66 minutes of action and Whitworth stood tall and faced a minimal attack by the Orediggers.

The ThunderWolves finished with four corners.

"Fantastic collective performance tonight," said Pack Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees. "The standard was at the level needed for 90 minutes. We competed for every ball and executed."

Twelvetrees added, "We know the level we can achieve if we play together and fight for each other."

CSU Pueblo (5-2) will finish its homestand with a pivotal nonconference match against No. 10 Colorado Mesa on Sunday starting at noon at Gonzales Stadium. Following the game, the Pack Women's Soccer team will host Western at 3 p.m.
