Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 23 ThunderWolves race past Newman

WICHITA, Kan. (August 27, 2022) - No. 23 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer played a strong second half en route to picking up their first win of the season after scoring a 5-1 win at Newman on Saturday.

The ThunderWolves received goals from Gabriel Campora (Jr., Saltilla, Mexico), Lamar Bynum (So., Albuquerque, NM), Rayk Riechmann (Jr., Minden, Germany) and Ricardo Schroeder Jr. (Jr., Parana, Brazil).

In the match, CSU Pueblo totaled 18 shots and nine landing on frame. The offense was explosive the entire match as they earned 15 corner kicks and limited Newman to just one corner in the game.

The Jets scored first in the 11th minute and would stay that way until the 40th minute when Bynum hit the ball low and left of the goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1 going to halftime.

In the second half, the Pack kept the pressure on the defense and was rewarded for their hard work when the ThunderWolves scored four goals in just over a 12-minute span.

Campora put the Pack ahead with his first goal of the season in the 72nd minute. Paul Suarez (Jr., Macclesfield, Cheshire) and Fernando Herrera (Queretaro, Mexico) both earned assists on the goal.

Shortly after, Riechmann put himself in the box score with a goal in the 78th minute.

Another goal by Campora in the 82nd minute and a goal from Schroeder in the 84th minute secured the win for the Pack.

In the net, Nils Roth (Jr., Thun, Switzerland) made two saves against eight shots from Newman.

"It has been a really valuable few days together. We are growing and getting better as a group," said Pack Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees. "Thursday night was a tough ending after some very positive moments in the game. Then today I was happy to see us overcome some adversity after going down 1-0."

"We showed the most important part of a team and that is our character," Twelvetrees added. "We kept going and going and Gabriel, Rayk and Ricardo scored excellent goals to open their accounts and get us our first win of the season after Lamar had showed his nerves to convert a vital penalty in the first half."

CSU Pueblo (1-1) stays on the road next week for a pair of nonconference matches at MSU Billings (Sept. 1) and against Northwest Nazarene (Sept. 3). The match against NNU will be played in Billings, Montana.
