GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (May 5, 2022) – Colorado State University Pueblo baseball (26-21, 17-11 RMAC) fell to No. 17 Colorado Mesa University 5-4 in heartbreaking fashion Thursday night to kick-off a four-game set with the Mavericks.
The ThunderWolves started off the evening in good shape.
Reggie Williams singled out of the leadoff spot and was soon doubled home by
Brady Prewitt two at-bats later. The Prewitt RBI double put the Pack on top 1-0 early on and gave starting pitcher
Tim McIntyre energy on the hill.
McIntyre retired the side in short order and moved the game into the second with the Pack maintaining the narrow 1-0 advantage.
Matt Shea led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and was followed up with a
Kysen Howard walk.
Elijah Borjas stepped up next and came through with a RBI single to extend the lead temporarily.
Jacob Federico was able to follow up with a single through the left side, and soon after, Williams batted home Borjas to take a 4-0 lead after two go-arounds at the plate.
Colorado Mesa then began to chip away at the 4-0 Pack advantage. The bottom of the second, the Mavericks pushed across a run and then again in the fifth. McIntyre held a 4-2 lead headed into the seventh inning when he was eventually relieved. McIntyre exited with a narrow 4-2 lead after he notched four strikeouts in six innings of work.
The persistent bats of Colorado Mesa continued to keep up with the Pack and eventually tied the ballgame up with a run in the bottom of the eighth. The Mavericks then held the Pack and pounced in the bottom of the ninth.
Colorado Mesa scored the winning run in the bottom of ninth off a wild pitch. The Pack ultimately fell 5-4.
Trey Vasquez, Williams, Prewitt and Shea each tallied two hits in the opening game loss while Williams, Prewitt, Borjas and Federico each racked up a RBI.
CSU Pueblo will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against the Mavericks. First pitch for the opening game will be at 3:30 p.m.
