GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (May 12, 2022) – Clutch home runs by
Elijah Borjas and
Brady Prewitt paired with a commanding relief performance from
Edwing Corrales lifted Colorado State University Pueblo (27-24) over top-seeded Colorado Mesa University (37-13) in its second game at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. The Pack win moves them into Friday's 3 p.m. match-up with UCCS.
The ThunderWolves rattled off three base-hits to kick-off the game and had
Reggie Williams,
Noah Hennings and Prewitt ready to run with the bases loaded.
Ty Lewis was able bat home Williams from third, but the Pack were only able to squeeze out one run and entered the bottom half of the first ahead 1-0.
The Mavericks responded with one score in the bottom frame and the game progressed into the third quietly.
In the top of the third, Williams led off with a walk and was soon advanced by a Hennings single. The Pack were able to capitalize in the next at-bat with a Prewitt double to right center. Williams scored on the double and Hennings soon followed across home plate thanks to a
Trey Vasquez groundout.
The 3-1 advantage energized the Pack, but the Mavericks were not discouraged and responded with their own offensive flurry of runs. Colorado Mesa hit three consecutive homers in the bottom of the third and gained a 5-3 lead over the Pack.
The early offensive game would continue in the top of the fourth. Borjas got ahold of his pitch and was able to sneak a well-struck ball over the centerfield wall to pull the ThunderWolves within a run.
Zach Pratt came out for his final inning of work in the bottom frame and shut down a threat by the Mavericks after he drew a double play ball for
Jacob Federico and Vasquez to cleanup.
The ThunderWolves defense then came alive and patiently waited at the plate. Corrales relieved Pratt in the fifth and held the Mavericks to just two hits in his first three innings of work.
The ThunderWolves' bats were able to jump on their opportunity in the top of the eighth. A Vasquez single started things off and the shortstop was able to sneak around the bases to stand on third for Borjas. Borjas lifted a deep fly ball to centerfield and allowed Vasquez to tag-up from third and race home to give the Pack a 6-5 advantage headed into the bottom half of the eighth.
From there, it was all Corrales. The hurler struck out two in the eighth and then retired the side in the ninth with ease to secure the Pack's 6-5 victory over the top-seeded Colorado Mesa squad. Corrales retired his final seven batters faced.
Prewitt led the Pack at the plate with a 3-5 performance which featured two RBIs and homer. Borjas finished with two crucial RBIs off a 1-3 day at the plate while Williams accounted for two of the six runs scored.
Corrales (2-5) earned the win after five innings work out of the bullpen. He racked up six strikeouts, did not allow a run and only walked one batter to put an exclamation point on his commanding presence on the mound.
