PUEBLO, Colo. (April 24, 2022) – A late push falls short for the Colorado State University Pueblo men's lacrosse team in a 20-13 loss to Westminster. The ThunderWolves move to 2-8 on the season and 1-4 in RMAC play.
The Griffins came out hot scoring the first two goals of the game in the first minute and a half of play before
Cameron Hancock (Jr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) put the Pack on the scoreboard with 12:50 on the score board.
Ian Noonan (Jr., Wilmington, Del.) quickly tied the game at two goals after scoring off a nice assist from
Aryan Krause (So., Aurora, Colo.). Hancock later gave the Pack a 3-2 lead with 11:31 in the first quarter after hitting the top left corner and scoring his 14th goal of the season.
The Griffins managed to tie the game before the ThunderWolves were able to put together three unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead with 3:30 left in the first quarter.
Hancock scored off an assist from Noonan,
Brett Woolcock (Fr., Humble, Texas) scored off an assist from
Logan Naves (So., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Krause scored the third goal for the Pack during the run before two goals in the final minute of the quarter ended with the Pack holding on to a 6-5 advantage.
Westminster picked up the pace on defense while holding the ThunderWolves to one goal off three shots in the second quarter while scoring six goals of their own to take an 11-7 lead going into halftime.
Westminster came out of the break and extended their lead with a goal before Krause found the back of the net to make it 12-8. CSU Pueblos
Turner Dirk (So., Alberta, Canada) was called for an illegal check and put the Griffins in a man-up situation that they took advantage of and scored a goal to make it 13-8.
Back-to-back goals gave the Griffins a 15-8 lead with 05:28 left in the third quarter before a flurry of goals from the Pack brought them back into the game.
Naves kicked of the run with a goal at the 3:40 mark before
Trevor Thompson (Sr., Sacramento, Calif.) followed twenty seconds later with his first goal of the game.
Dylan Johnson (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.) brought the Pack within four after scoring his 10th goal of the season as CSU Pueblo went into the last quarter trailing 15-11.
The Griffins managed a goal to start the fourth before Krause scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit down to 16-13 with 8:37 to play.
Westminster again picked up the pace on defense and scored four unanswered goals to hold on to a 20-13 win over the ThunderWolves.
Krause led the Pack with four goals and three assists while Hancock tallied three goals off eight shots and three ground balls. Naves also scored a goal for the Pack and added a team-high four assists.
Ethan Ferrie (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) played a steady game in the goal registering 21 saves after facing 41 shots on goal.
The ThunderWolves will play their final game of the regular season against Adams State on Saturday, April 30, at 12 p.m. in Alamosa, Colo.
