6-Run 6th Inning Lifts Pack to Series Clinching Victory Over Cougars

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (April 24, 2022) – After trailing early, Colorado State University Pueblo (24-18, 15-9 RMAC) was able to score six runs in the sixth inning and seal the 8-5 victory over Colorado Christian (13-28, 9-15 RMAC). The Sunday afternoon win over Colorado Christian also clinched the ThunderWolves' series win 3-1.

The Cougars were able to push in a run in the opening frame and took an early lead over the ThunderWolves. In the third, the Pack were able to strike thanks to a Brady Prewitt home run. Prewitt's homer knocked in Noah Hennings and put the Pack ahead 2-1 after three innings of play.

The ThunderWolves held a 2-1 advantage until the fourth inning until the Cougars were able to flip the script and push across two runs in the bottom of the frame. Colorado Christian scored one more run in the fifth inning to claim a 4-2 lead over the Pack.

Finally in the sixth inning, the red-hot Pack offense was able to once again click and fire on all cylinders. Hennings was able to kick-off the inning with a double down the leftfield line and was followed up by Prewitt being hit by a pitch and Trey Vasquez getting on board with a bunt for a single. With the bases loaded, Ty Lewis smacked a ground rule double to score Hennings and a pinch-running Zac Hanenberg.

During the next at-bat, Vasquez exhibited savvy baserunning and crossed home off a wild pitch. After a couple of walks, and a ground out, Kysen Howard singled to center and scored Lewis and Elijah Borjas. To cap off the impressive flurry of offense, Reggie Williams doubled home Howard.

The six-run inning turned the tables in the Pack's favor and gave them an 8-4 advantage after six innings.

Colorado Christian crossed one more run in the seventh inning, but the lively arm of Frank Wierman and clean Pack defense silenced the Cougars' bats. Wierman effectively threw four innings of relief, as Dylan Weaver came on in the ninth to close out the Pack victory. The strong second half by CSU Pueblo allowed the Pack to clinch an 8-5 win over Colorado Christian.

Prewitt, Howard and Lewis each racked up two RBIs apiece. Prewitt, Howard and Williams each batted 2-4 from the plate while Borjas went 2-3 to go with Hennings' 2-5 performance. On the mound, Jake Lombardelli got the start and went four innings before Wierman came on in relief. The two pitchers racked up five strikeouts between their eight innings of work. Between Lombardelli, Wierman and Weaver, the Cougars were only able to squeeze off six hits and four earned runs.

The series victory over Colorado Christian is the fourth of the Pack's RMAC season. CSU Pueblo heads back home for its final home series of the season next Friday, as UCCS travels to Pueblo for a four-game set. The Pack will host Pack the Park on Friday a 7 p.m., hosted at Runyon Field.
