Explosive Bats Highlight Doubleheader Split With Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (April 22, 2022) – 68 total runs crossed the plate in an action packed Friday doubleheader between Colorado State University Pueblo and Colorado Christian University. The Pack were led by three home runs apiece from Ty Lewis and Elijah Borjas in a day that saw 10 Pack homers.

Game 1 | CCU 21 – CSU Pueblo 14

The opening game of the afternoon started off quickly in the Cougars' favor. The Cougars struck in the bottom of the first inning off a three-run homer and put the ThunderWolves in a tough spot early.

Matt Shea responded for the Pack in the top of the second inning with a solo home run blast to leftfield and gave the squad life early in the contest. The runs stopped for the Pack but did not for the Cougars.

Colorado Christian unloaded eight runs in the third inning and created an 11-1 gap for the Pack to attempt to overcome. Scoreless fourth and fifth innings proved fatal for the ThunderWolves as the Cougars crossed 10 more runs in the frames and took a 21-1 advantage after five innings.

CSU Pueblo did not back off and were able to show signs of life in the sixth. The Pack were helped to a RBI single from Noah Hennings who was able to bat home Tyson PallattThen, Ty Lewis saw his pitch and took the offering over the fence for a grand slam. The five-run inning gave the Pack new life at the plate and encouraged the squad headed into the seventh and final inning.

After shutting down the home half of the sixth, the Pack struck big again. Hennings crossed first on a wild pitch and then was followed up by another big-time homer from Lewis. Lewis smacked another three-run blast and put the ThunderWolves in double digit scoring. Shea followed Lewis in the next at-bat with his second solo shot of the game and continued the rally.

After Pallatt and Reggie Williams found their way on base, Elijah Borjas came through for the Pack and continued the home run party with a three-run blast of his own.

Despite the big-time, 13-run rally, the ThunderWolves impressive run came to an end and ultimately claimed a 21-14 loss to Colorado Christian in game one of the doubleheader.

Lewis racked up seven RBIs across his two home runs while the Pack tallied five homers in the game.

Game 2 | CSU Pueblo 22 – CCU 11

In the second game of the doubleheader, CSU Pueblo chased revenge. After scoreless frames in the first inning, the Pack were able to strike in the second through patience at the plate. Williams walked with the bases loaded and crossed in a run to put the ThunderWolves on the board. Kysen Howard followed with a RBI of his own off a fielder's choice ball hit to short.

The 2-0 lead did not last long and the Cougars knotted it up in the bottom frame. The Pack once again responded. Trey Vasquez got ahold of a pitch and drove it well beyond the outfield wall for a two-run home run that scored Brady Prewitt and extended the Pack's lead.

The inning continued and Shea made his way aboard via base on balls. Williams took care of his teammate and drove Shea home with a double to center. Borjas knocked in Williams with a RBI single. Finally, the marathon inning was topped by a Howard double which was able to bring in Borjas. The Pack exited the frame ahead 7-2.

Colorado Christian made the game interesting in the bottom of the third, however. The Cougars batted around and pushed across eight runs to turn the tables and put the Pack in a 10-7 hole. The persevering mentality from the ThunderWolves and hot bat of Lewis put the Pack back in the driver's seat, as the third basemen went yard once more. This time Lewis brought home Vasquez and Prewitt with him on his trip around the bases.

Johnathan Ramirez made quick work of the Cougars in the bottom of the fourth and moved the tied ballgame into the next frame with momentum in the favor of the Pack.

Borjas once again logged a solo home run to kick things off in the fifth and give the Pack an edge. Vasquez then soon tallied his second homer of the game and scored Howard and Hennings off the deep blast.

Once again Ramirez took care of business on the mound in straight order and preserved the 14-10 lead for the ThunderWolves. In the top of the sixth, Borjas continued his hot day at the plate with a RBI single and was followed by RBI singles from Max Pawela and Hennings. Vasquez highlighted the inning with a two-run double to left that scored Pawela and Hennings.

The Cougars got one run back in the sixth, but the locked-in Ramirez refused the scrappy club get back in the game. The seventh inning saw Borjas add the cherry on top of his impressive day with a two-run home run. Later in the inning, Jacob Federico crossed home thanks to a RBI single from Prewitt.

Ramirez silenced the Cougars' bats in the bottom of the seventh and sealed the Pack win over Colorado Christian 22-11.

Vasquez batted 3-4 and racked up seven RBIs out of the cleanup spot in the second game to lead the ThunderWolves offensively. Borjas could not be stopped and tallied five RBIs off a 4-5 effort at the plate. Lewis finished with three RBIs to total a team-high 10 on the day.

CSU Pueblo looks to keep the offensive momentum, as the Pack take on Colorado Christian Saturday at 4 p.m.
