Pack sweep Saturday doubleheader against Black Hills

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 2, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team swept their Saturday doubleheader against Black Hills State and totaled 21 hits en route to a pair of wins at Rawlings Sports Complex.

The Pack shutout the Yellow Jackets 8-0 in the first game and outlasted BHSU 3-2 in the nightcap.

On the day, Isabel Griego (Sr., Loveland, Colo.) led the ThunderWolves with six hits, a triple and three runs.

Pack pitcher Sophia Lishner (So., Gilbert, Ariz.) picked up both wins in the circle and allowed one unearned run in 8.2 innings of work.

In the series opener, the ThunderWolves offense came alive from the onset and scored five runs in the first three innings.

During their first at bat, CSU Pueblo went ahead 1-0 when Griego singled on the infield and after a pair of stolen bases, she came around to score on a defensive error.

In the second, Katelynn Ralston (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) led off with a double and Delaney Barela (So., Pueblo, Colo.) followed with a bunt single and both would come around to score on another error by the Yellow Jackets.

Two more runs crossed in the third inning for the Pack on two-run single through the right side from Jill Bishop (Jr., Brighton, Colo.).

Another run scored in the fourth on a RBI single from Griego to give the Pack a 6-0 lead.

The Pack reached eight runs in the sixth on a two-run double from Hannah Hackney (Sr., Erie, Colo.), closing out the run-rule contest.

The second game of the afternoon turned into a pitcher's dual between the Pack's Taylor Strupp (Sr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) and BHSU's Shayla Tuschen.

Strupp gave up one run and struckout five in 8.1 innings of work. She scattered nine hits and allowed on walk.

Both teams remained scoreless through five innings and BHSU scored the first run of the game during their half of the sixth. The Pack responded in their half with a run after smart running on the bases forced the Yellow Jackets to commit an error, tying the game at 1-1 going to the seventh.

During the top of the 9th inning, Lishner was called on in relief of Strupp and she escaped the inning with no runs given up.

The score went unchanged until the 11th when the Yellow Jackets went ahead by one run after two leadoff walks resulted in a run crossing the plate.

In their half, Griego placed a beautiful bunt single in front of the plate and reached safely. She stole second and came around to score when Hackney reached safely on the third error of the contest by the Yellow Jackets and she would get into scoring position on the play.

Jacelynn Trujillo (So., Pueblo, Colo.) was called on to pinch run at second base and ended up at third base following another sac bunt. She would score in the next at bat on a soft single that the Yellow Jacket pitcher was unable to handle, allowing Trujillo to score from third.

Lishner is now 4-6 on the season.

CSU Pueblo (14-13, 10-12 RMAC) will finish the series on Sunday with another doubleheader scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at Rawlings Sports Complex.

NOTE: The Sunday doubleheader will be streamed on the ThunderWolves Facebook page.
