ThunderWolves complete sweep of New Mexico Highlands

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 16, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team picked up a much needed four-game series sweep against New Mexico Highlands after the Pack defeated the Cowgirls twice on Saturday at Rawlings Sports Complex.

The Pack shutout NMHU in game one, 6-0 behind a combined pitching performance and in the finale, the ThunderWolves picked up a 6-2 victory to keep pace in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.

With two series left in the regular season, CSU Pueblo took care of business when they needed it most.

On the day, Odalis Jackson (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz.) and Katelynn Ralston (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) both recorded three hits each and combined for three runs.

Three other Pack players tallied two hits in the doubleheader.

In game one, CSU Pueblo got on the board first when Ralston singled in the first run of the game and was followed by a 2-run homerun from Taylor Puga (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) to put the Pack on top early, 3-0.

In the third, Ashley Tosh (Fr., Fremont, Calif.) hit a sac fly to score the fourth run of the game.

The Pack added two more runs in the sixth inning after two defensive errors by NMHU to go ahead by six runs.

Pack starting pitcher Taylor Strupp (Sr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) earned a no-decision after throwing 4.0 innings and gave up no runs and scattered five hits along with two strikeouts.

Called on in relief, Puga finished the last three complete innings and allowed no runs on two hits and one strikeout to earn her first victory of the season.

In the series finale, the ThunderWolves went down 1-0 in the second inning and tied the game in the third on a single from Jill Bishop (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) up the middle.

The Pack manufactured two more runs in the fourth.

NMHU's Heaven Medina homered twice, both solo shots including one in the fifth inning for the Cowgirls.

Starting the sixth inning in relief, Sophia Lishner (So., Gilbert, Ariz.) pitched 2.0 innings and allowed no runs on two hits.

Trujillo ended her day with a line of 5.0 innings pitched, two earned runs allowed on two hits. She finished with seven strikeouts.

In the sixth inning, the Pack extended their lead with three more runs crossing on three hits.

Lishner earned a save after she retired the side in order in the seventh to seal the sweep for the ThunderWolves.

CSU Pueblo (18-19, 14-18 RMAC) will go on the road next week for the last time in the regular season. The Pack will take on Adams State in a four-game series starting Saturday at noon at ASU Softball Field in Alamosa, Colo.
