Valiant Second Half Effort Comes Up Short in 12-11 Loss to Fort Lewis

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 1, 2022) – A second half surge was not enough Friday afternoon, as the Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse squad (0-7, 0-2) fell to Fort Lewis College (2-5, 2-1 RMAC) 12-11. Ashley Hendricks recorded her third-straight game with three goals or more with her second-consecutive hat trick.

The Pack started off the day hot after Hendricks and Baylee Mee netted two goals in the opening 62 seconds. Six total goals were scored in the opening seven minutes following a game-tying score by Sedona Sargent with 8:48 to go in the first quarter.

Hendricks and Caira Lessick each notched a goal apiece in the next 48 seconds and forced a Fort Lewis timeout with 8:00 remaining in the quarter. The Skyhawks tallied two more goals before the quarter expired and knotted things up at 5-5 after the opening frame.

At the 8:43 mark in the second quarter, the Pack called a timeout and regrouped after the Skyhawks rattled off four unanswered goals to kick-off the quarter.

The timeout slowed the Fort Lewis attack and deterred the Skyhawks' offense. 12 seconds before halftime, Mee fired off her second goal of the afternoon and made the game a 9-6 contest headed into the break.

Out of halftime, Fort Lewis once again broke the silence in the quarter with a goal 46 seconds into the third. Trailing by four goals in the second half, the Pack looked for an offensive jolt in their attack.

Hendricks fired home her third goal of the afternoon off the feed by Mee with 12:22 on the clock. The Pack continued their attack and Caira Lessick followed Hendricks with her first goal of the contest off a free position opportunity.

With 6:13 to go in the third quarter and playing down a player, the Pack persisted on their attack. Parker Delp received a crisp pass from Maddie Miller and finessed her shot by the Skyhawks goalie. The Delp goal pulled the Pack within a goal with nearly a quarter and a half to go in the game.

The 10-9 tally carried over into the fourth quarter and the Skyhawks added on two quick goals in the final frame.

Time began to wind down on the ThunderWolves' hopes, but CSU Pueblo refused to yield quietly. 4:18 remained on the clock and Lessick took matters into her own hands off a free position opportunity. Her shot blazed by the Fort Lewis goalie and pulled the Pack back within two goals with time on the clock.

CSU Pueblo still needed more offensive attacks from different areas and found it with just over three minutes remaining. Miller, who is primarily a defender, raced into place drew a free position shot. The veteran defender slung a shot by the goalie and tallied her first goal of the season.

3:04 still remained, but the Fort Lewis defense forced turnovers and held tight to prevent any more shots from the Pack which ultimately sealed CSU Pueblo's fate.

The ThunderWolves fell 12-11 to the Skyhawks after the valiant comeback came up short.

Lessick and Hendricks each tallied three goals apiece in the Friday loss. The hat trick for Lessick is her second of the season. Lessick also pulled in six ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Vivian Reukauf notched four caused turnovers to go with three from Jacqueline Deandrea.

CSU Pueblo falls to 0-7 on the season and 0-2 in the young RMAC season, but looks to grab a win Sunday at noon as the Pack host Adams State at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
