PUEBLO, Colo. (April 1, 2022) – A complete game from
Tim McIntyre was enough for the Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team (19-12) to clinch a 7-2 win over Metropolitan State University Denver (19-13) Friday afternoon. The complete game win for McIntyre is the first of his career.
The opening innings were defensively dominated from both sides. The opening 12 batters from MSU Denver and CSU Pueblo were retired in straight order and sent the game into the third inning without a hit from either opponent.
Reggie Williams tallied the Pack's first hit with a leadoff single in the third inning, but Reichle Arcilise from MSU Denver retired the next three batters and kept the game scoreless.
McIntyre and Arcilise continued to roll through the lineups in the fourth and took the game into the fifth in a stubborn 0-0 stalemate.
Two hits by the Roadrunners in the fifth fueled a one-run inning for MSU Denver and broke the scoreless contest to give the visitors a temporary 1-0 lead. The Pack were unable to find a response and a base hit by
Brock Rodrigues was silenced by consecutive fly-outs in the sixth.
McIntyre surrendered one more run in the seventh, but the 2-0 deficit did not intimidate the temporarily struggling Pack batters.
Ty Lewis hit a one-out single to left and was moved over by
Matt Shea after the designated hitter wore a 2-2 pitch. Williams then loaded the bases with a single to centerfield and forced the Roadrunners to make a move to the bullpen with one out in the seventh.
A strikeout followed the pitching change seemed to encourage the MSU Denver efforts, but a pinch hit walk by
Brodie Blackford put the Pack on the board.
Jacob Federico followed the RBI walk with two RBIs off a well-struck single to centerfield. The three-run inning allowed the Pack to take a 3-2 lead after seven innings and shift momentum in the ThunderWolves' favor.
McIntyre rolled through the top half of the eighth inning and reinvigorated the Pack bats.
Brady Prewitt kicked off the eighth with a single and later advanced to third after a
Trey Vasquez walk and a Lewis sacrifice bunt.
Shea then followed up with two RBIs off a well-placed double to leftfield that knocked home Prewitt and Vasquez. Two batters later,
Kysen Howard joined the hit-parade and doubled down the leftfield line to score Shea and Williams. The four-run inning gave McIntyre a four-run cushion for McIntyre to come back out and finish off the Roadrunners.
In a quick 1-2-3 inning, McIntyre retired the ninth in straight order and clinched his complete game win, as the Pack emerged victorious 7-2.
McIntyre is now 7-0 on the season to lead the Pack as their consistent ace. The complete game win was his first in his years as a ThunderWolves hurler.
Howard, Shea and Federico all tallied two RBIs off a hit apiece, while Williams was able to bat 3-4 and score two of the seven runs.
The patient play from the Pack clinched the team its 19th win of the season and fourth win over MSU Denver. The non-conference win moves the Pack to 11-6 at home and 8-7 in non-conference match-ups.
The Pack look to carry the momentum into a Saturday contest with Colorado Christian (8-17). The pod game will take place at Rawlings Field at noon.
