ThunderWolves battle Cougars to extras

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (March 27, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team finished its four-game series at Colorado Christian on Sunday, dropping the final two games in the series 8-0 (5 inn.) in game one and in the series finale, the Pack battled the Cougars to extra innings, falling 3-2 (9 inn.) at All Star Park in Lakewood.

On the day, Delaney Barela (So., Pueblo, Colo.) had three hits including a double. Hannah Hackney (Sr., Erie, Colo.) added two doubles and Tori Cordova (Fr., Pueblo West, Colo.) finished with a pair of singles.

In game one, CSU Pueblo managed four hits guided by Barela's 2-for-2 game at the plate.

The potent lineup from CCU scored all of the runs in the first two innings. After one, the Cougars went ahead 3-0 and tacked on five more runs during their next at bat.

Starting in the circle, Sophia Lishner (So., Gilbert, Ariz.) gave up four earned runs and five in one complete inning. She scattered four hits and gave up two walks.

Jacelynn Trujillo (So., Pueblo, Colo.) came on in relief and tossed 3.0 innings, allowed three runs on five hits. Trujillo finished with three strikeouts and three walks.

In the series finale, CSU Pueblo scored two runs in their first at bat on RBI hits from Hackney and Jill Bishop (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) to put the Pack ahead 2-0.

Pack starting pitcher Taylor Strupp (Sr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) held CCU to six hits during the middle innings and fanned four batters.

The defense for the ThunderWolves was solid and helped keep the Cougars off the board.

Carrying the two run lead heading to the bottom of the seventh, the leadoff hitter singled and the next batter hit a game-tying homerun to left centerfield, knotting the game at two apiece.

Strupp was able to get out of the inning with the winning run in scoring position.

The ThunderWolves went retired in order in their half of the ninth and in the bottom half, CCU's lead off hitter singled and came around to score during the next at bat off a triple down the right field line.

Strupp takes the tough loss and falls to 6-4 on the year.

For the series, Barela led the Pack with five hits and a double. Hackney had four hits, recording two doubles and two homeruns.

CSU Pueblo (12-13, 8-12) returns home next week and plays host to Black Hills State in a four-game RMAC series at Rawlings Sports Complex.
