Pack Drop Saturday Doubleheader at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 26, 2022) – The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball squad (17-12, 10-5 RMAC) was defeated by Adams State (4-17, 2-9 RMAC) 8-3 and 12-11 in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. It is the first time the ThunderWolves have dropped back-to-back since Feb. 15.

Game 1 | Adams State 8 – CSU Pueblo 3

The Pack and Grizzlies kicked off the doubleheader with strong offensive performances early on. CSU Pueblo was helped to a run after Jacob Federico crossed the plate off a Brady Prewitt single to center.

The 1-0 lead did not intimidate the Grizzlies, and the hosts responded. Adams State slapped four base hits in the bottom of the first and brought home three runs to jump out to an early 3-1 lead over the Pack.

The ThunderWolves tried to stay in contention in the top of the second. With one out in the frame, Matt Shea and Reggie Williams batted for singles and advanced to second and third off a wild pitch. Kysen Howard brought Shea home off a ground out to second base and brought the Pack within a run after the top half of the second.

Adams piled on four more runs in the bottom half of the inning and put the Pack in a tough 7-2 hole after two.

Prewitt knocked home Federico again in the third to inch the Pack closer, but the RBI base-hit was not enough to rally the troops.

After another run in the third by the Grizzlies, the game sped along. Johnathan Ramirez did not surrender another runner on the hill in his final three innings pitched and also tallied three strikeouts.

The Ramirez pitching performance and Pack bats were not enough to dig out of the five-run hole. CSU Pueblo ultimately dropped game one 8-3 to Adams State.

The ThunderWolves racked up 10 hits in the game which included three from Prewitt, two from Federico and two from Noah Hennings. Prewitt also notched two RBIs.

Game 2 | Adams State 12 – CSU Pueblo 11

Game two began similar to the first in that the Pack were able to strike first. Ty Lewis knocked home Hennings with a single up the middle and was soon followed by a Williams RBI single.

The 2-0 lead did not last long after the Grizzlies got both runs back in the latter half of the frame. The 2-2 stalemate carried into the third after a fairly quiet second and CSU Pueblo's offense unloaded.
Trey Vasquez launched a 1-0 pitch and reinvigorated the Pack bats with a deep home run to dead centerfield. The energy fed over to Lewis in the at-bat, as the third baseman matched his teammate with a first pitch blast to center to take a 4-2 lead and give new life to CSU Pueblo.

The Grizzlies got a run back in the ensuing inning, but the Pack continued to ride high and took the game into the fourth with a lead.

Vasquez racked up two more RBIs in the fourth thanks to a well-struck double to right field that scored Prewitt and Hennings. The 6-3 padding was not enough to keep the Grizzlies at bay and the hosts once again pushed in more runs.

The Grizzlies' fourth frame was filled with sacrifice flies, RBI singles and was capped off by a home run. Adams' big inning put the Pack trailing 8-6 once again.

Manny Sierra was responsible to helping the ThunderWolves tie things back up in the fifth. Sierra knocked home Williams and Howard was able to score on the same play off a Grizzlies error.

The bottom of the fifth saw Frank Wierman shut down the Adams State bats and keep the game locked at 8-8 headed into the final two innings slated.

The Pack were unable to score in the sixth and surrendered two more runs by the hosts. CSU Pueblo would not be deterred and entered the top of the seventh collected as well as determined.

With one out and Howard on second base, Jaden Hill pinch hit for the Pack and came through for the team with an RBI single to draw the ThunderWolves within two runs. A Grizzlies error later prolonged the inning for the Pack and allowed Brock Rodrigues to score off a Hennings sacrifice fly, followed by Federico crossing the plate thanks to a Prewitt double.

The three-run inning gave the ThunderWolves a, 11-10 advantage headed into the bottom of the seventh. To the dismay of the Pack, the determined Grizzlies squad pushed across two runs with one out and walked things off after a balk.

Game two was highlighted by Vasquez's 2-4, three RBI performance that was capped off by a homer. Lewis finished his day off with another 3-4 showing that featured two RBIs. Williams scraped together two base hits and an RBI to help round out the CSU Pueblo efforts at the plate.

CSU Pueblo looks to split with Adams State Sunday, as the Pack closes out the four-game series with the Grizzlies at noon.
