Pack Outlast Orediggers to Take Series Opener 9-7

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 18, 2022) - For the fourth-straight series, the Colorado state University Pueblo baseball team (14-9,7-2) opened up its four game set with Colorado School of Mines (14-7, 3-6) with a 9-7 win. The Pack have won all four of their series-opening games in 2022.

The ThunderWolves started the game with a big first inning. After they surrendered a run in the top of the first inning, the Pack were able push three runners across home plate to jump to a 3-1 lead.

Jacob Federico evened the score at 1-1 after he took advantage of an Orediggers error. Ty Lewis then batted home Noah Hennings thanks to a well hit single through the right side. Matt Shea capped off the inning with another single, this time crossing Brady Prewitt. Tim McIntyre retired the Orediggers quickly in the top of the second and the Pack once again fed off the starter's energy.

After finding his way aboard, Brock Rodrigues was brought home thanks to an electric triple to right center by Hennings. Prewitt knocked Hennings home from third to keep the inning going. Shea then notched another triple, this time to dead centerfield, scoring Ty Lewis and Trey Vasquez.

The Pack's two big opening innings gave them a 7-1 cushion entering the third frame. CSU Pueblo surrendered a Mines run in the third but continued to enjoy a strong lead.

After the run in the third, McIntyre settled in on the hill. The hurler ended with 5.2 innings pitched  and eventually surrendered four earned runs.

Mines pulled within a run after a big attack in the sixth inning. Prewitt responded with a deep home run to left center and was later followed up by an RBI single from Reggie Williams.

The Orediggers got one back in the top of the seventh, but Frank Wierman came on in relief and halted momentum. Wierman dominated the final two innings and clinched the Pack's 9-7 win over Mines.

McIntyre took his fifth win of the season while Wierman claimed his fourth save. Shea led the Pack batters with three RBIs off 3-5 hitting. Prewitt, Hennings, Federico, Vasquez, Lewis and Rodrigues all tallied two hits apiece.

The ThunderWolves continue their series Saturday at noon with the Orediggers with a doubleheader at Rawlings Field.
