Historic Pack Season Ends After 65-57 Loss in NCAA Tournament First Round

CANYON, Texas (March 11, 2022) – After a record-breaking 2021-22 season, the Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball was unable to pull out a win in the First Round of the NCAA National Tournament and ultimately fell to Lubbock Christian 65-57. The ThunderWolves' season came to a close following the first-round loss.

The contest began with a defensive battle on both ends. The Pack were finally able to break through for the first points of the game nearly three minutes into the game. Lubbock soon jumped to an 8-0 run and put the Pack in an 8-2 deficit at the quarter's midway mark.

After a run from the Chaparrals, the Pack were able to dig into the lead after they sank the final four shots of the quarter. After one frame, the ThunderWolves trailed modestly 20-12.

The second quarter saw a different story than the first. The Pack jumped on a modest 7-2 spurt and closed the Lady Chaps lead down to three points with 4:33 to go in the half. Throughout their spurt, the ThunderWolves limited Lubbock Christian to no field goals in a frame of 3:37.

Following back-to-back buckets from Amaya Lewis, the Pack were able to completely comeback and make it a tied ballgame at 26-26 with 3:09 to go in the second.

Lewis hit a crucial and-one bucket with under 30 seconds to go in the quarter and sent the Pack into the locker room trailing 30-29.

At the break Alisha Davis has eight points along with two blocks and five rebounds to help lead the Pack through the opening half. JaNaiya Davis and Lewis each had seven points to help bring depth to the first half offensive efforts.

Out of the break, Alisha Davis kicked things off with great defense and made an aggressive block from behind to energize the Pack. The junior forward went back to the other end and gave the Pack their first lead of the game after two made free throws put the ThunderWolves ahead 31-30 early in the third.

CSU Pueblo was eventually able to hold two-point lead after Tomia Johnson knocked home a 3-point basket with three minutes to go in the quarter. Lubbock Christian refused to allow the Pack to keep the lead and held a 44-42 advantage after three quarters of play.

Lubbock Christian jumped on the Pack in the fourth quarter and tried to put the team away. By the six-minute mark, the Chaparrals clung on to a six-point lead after taking a modest run to begin the final quarter.

The Pack tried to dig into the lead but ultimately traded buckets with Lubbock Christian until the 3:21 mark when the ThunderWolves still lagged behind 60-54. Lubbock Christian hit a layup and then another 3-pointer to quickly grow the Pack deficit to 11 points with under two minutes to play.

Despite one more 3-pointer from Torie Bass with seconds to play, the ThunderWolves were defeated 65-57 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Pack shot 41.5% from the floor and outrebounded Lubbock Christian 33-24 as a team. CSU Pueblo was helped to 14 points off the bench and enjoyed 34 points in the paint.
