Pack Defense Swarms Yellow Jackets to Claim 70-56 Road Victory

SPEARFISH, S.D. (Feb. 5, 2022) – The No. 25 Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team (17-5, 13-3 RMAC) made a statement win over Black Hills State (13-8, 11-4 RMAC) on the road Saturday evening. The ThunderWolves' 70-56 win over the Yellow Jackets marked their third straight win.

The Pack kicked off the game hot and fast with an 8-0 start. Black Hills State responded quickly with a run of their own. The Yellow Jackets closed out the quarter on a 14-4 run and put the Pack in a narrow 14-13 deficit after the opening period.

To start the second quarter, JaNaiya Davis nailed a fast break jumper in the paint to start a 7-0 spurt. The burst was highlighted by a Ro Dominguez 3-pointer and a Jazzy Hughes layup.

The Pack were unable to pull away from the Yellow Jackets despite the offensive surge. Alisha Davis logged seven points in the second quarter to lead the Pack, but the ThunderWolves were able to see offensive production from six different players. CSU Pueblo headed into the halftime break ahead 36-31 after a strong, 23-point performance in the second.

The opening 1:30 of the second half saw the Yellow Jackets dwindle the Pack lead down to two points, but CSU Pueblo would not be deterred.

Jalen Long connection from 3-point land kickstarted a long and overwhelming 13-0 run over the course of 3:50. The run was capped by back-to-back threes from Dominguez. The three 3-pointer in the 13-0 run shifted the momentum back in the favor of the Pack.

After Black Hills got the Pack lead down to nine points, Tomia Johnson got the lead back to 10 points following a made free throw. The ThunderWolves entered the fourth quarter ahead 55-45.

Alisha Davis got the fourth quarter started off right for the Pack with five-straight points following a layup and 3-pointer.

Off a series of small bursts from the Pack, the CSU Pueblo lead swelled to 22 points following a 7-0 run topped by a Long 3-pointer with 3:49 to go in the fourth quarter. The ThunderWolves were able to ice the game from there and clinch a 70-56 win over Black Hills State.

The third-straight win for the Pack snapped a six-game win-streak by the Yellow Jackets. CSU Pueblo's 11 steals and 17 forced turnovers suffocated the Black Hills State offense and forced the Yellow Jackets to shoot just 28.9% from the field.

Alisha Davis notched 25 points and eight rebounds on the night to lead the Pack in both categories. The transfer junior's scoring performance was her second-straight 25-point act and her fourth of the season.

JaNaiya Davis notched 10 points scoring on the night and added five rebounds, two steals and an assist to her line. Kansas Watts pulled down six rebounds, tallied three blocks and nabbed two steals to enforce the defensive side of the court.

The Pack look to carry their Saturday night win over to their Sunday night match-up against Chadron State College (7-12, 6-8 RMAC). Tip-off against Eagles is at 4 p.m.
