Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Baston goal late lifts No. 11 ThunderWolves past No. 20 UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 19, 2022) - No. 11 ranked Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team returned to the win column after coming away with a hard-fought 1-0 win on the road at University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

Joseph Baston scored his second goal of the season with less than eight minutes left in regulation to carry the ThunderWolves.

On a night when the offense struggled to connect on the passing, the ThunderWolves who average more than thirteen shots per match, totaled eight shots against UCCS.

The home team was issued a red card during the 50th minute which resulted in the ThunderWolves having a one-man advantage for nearly the entire second half.

The Pack relied heavily on the play of their defensive back line and Shjon Andrews rose to the occasion and was stellar at the center back position.

UCCS was held to six shots, three in each period, thanks to the play by Andrews alongside Lamar Bynum and Mahir Bingoel.

Through the first half, both teams went scoreless and the ThunderWolves early on had several good chances at the net that were fended off by the Mountain Lion defense.

At intermission, CSU Pueblo had recorded four shots and four corners.

Starting the second half, a collision in ThunderWolves territory resulted in the red card being issued.

From that point, the Mountain Lions continued to be the more aggressive team and had a few good looks at the net.

With about thirteen minutes left in regulation, UCCS was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards away and Bynum took a shot off his shins and the ball bounced back away from the goal.

A flurry of substitutions during the 81st minute brought on Baston to the pitch and he found himself on the receiving end of a cross pass in by Mario Sandoval and Baston hit a header goal in to the net.

After the goal, the Mountain Lions became deflated and mustered only two more shots over the last seven minutes.

In the net, Pack goalkeeper Nils Roth earned the win and made one save against six shots.

Pack Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees had high praise for his team's performance, "UCCS are an excellent side. They are talented and well organized. After a tight first half, the game changed after the red card."

"We had to work extremely hard to get the goal even against 10 men, but we never gave up and kept pushing. It was a great moment when Joe scored the winner. He works so hard everyday and deserves this big moment."

CSU Pueblo (13-3-1, 7-1-1 RMAC) will finish the regular season Sunday against MSU Denver. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
