LAS VEGAS, NM (Oct. 16, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive after picking up a 2-1 victory Sunday at New Mexico Highlands.
The ThunderWolves received goals from
Katie Bean (35') and
Ashley Bennett (74').
In the match, CSU Pueblo recorded five shots and four landed on goal. Along with the two goal scorers,
Faith Meredith,
Jacquelyn Kosegarten, and
Porsche Nieto also fired off a shot.
The ThunderWolves broke the scoreless game when Bean checked into the game and moments after, she got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and she fired a shot that was misplayed by the NMHU goalkeeper and snuck into the left post for the goal. It is the first goal of the season for Bean.
Carrying the 1-0 lead into the break, CSU Pueblo had three shots and two corner kicks.
In the second half, Highlands evened the score at 1-1, scoring a goal ten minutes into the period.
In what turned out to be a defensive battle during the second half, CSU Pueblo and the Cowgirls fought for possession throughout.
The ThunderWolves took the lead in the 74th minute after a ThunderWolves throw in to
Shelby Ransom who flicked a pass out wide to Bennett who created enough space and fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box for the 2-1 lead.
The Pack defense kept the Cowgirls at bay for the remaining fifteen minutes and came away with the win.
Pack goalkeeper
Nicole Genis gave up one goal and made three saves.
CSU Pueblo (4-9-2, 3-4-2 RMAC) returns home next week and host Colorado Christian Thursday at 6 p.m. and will entertain Colorado School of Mines on Sunday at 3 p.m., both matches at Art & Lorrraine Gonzales Stadium.
