Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 15 CSU Pueblo get past pesky SD Mines squad

PUEBLO, Colo. (Oct. 1, 2022) - No. 15 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer remained unbeaten in conference play following a 2-1 win over South Dakota Mines on Friday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

The ThunderWolves top scorer and conference leader in goals, Gabriel Campora scored his ninth goal of the season and Ricardo Schroeder Jr. chipped in with his fifth goal of the season in the winning effort.

In the match, CSU Pueblo outshot the Hardrockers 19-6 and included a 13-0 edge at halftime. The Pack totaled four corners against one for SDM.

The Pack got on the board early during the 12th minute when Lamar Bynum served in a ball from beyond midfield ahead to Campora who found his way past the defense and remained on-side as the Hardrocker goalkeeper came out to contest the ball. Campora was able to get his foot on the ball and it bounced high and just inside the left post for the one goal lead.

Later in the half in the 37th minute, Reggie Nicolas possessed the ball down the right side of the net and crossed the ball in to the far right side as Schroeder settled the ball at his feet and as the defender was coming on, hit a shot past the goalkeeper inside the right post to give the Pack a 2-0 lead.

At halftime, CSU Pueblo had earned three corner kicks versus one by SDM.

In the second half, the Pack allowed a goal five minutes into the period to give the Hardrockers some energy. The ThunderWolves defense stepped up to the occasion and prevented SDM from scoring the tying goal.

For the match, Schroeder led the attack with four shots and Dylan Zavatini and Aden O'Hara each recorded three shots.

At goalkeeper, Nils Roth and Wil Whitworth shared duties at the net, each playing one half. Whitworth gave up the lone goal in the match.

"Happy to get the result," said Pack Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees. "We played very well in first half limiting them to no shots. Against the wind in the second half we made some errors and were punished by a hard working SDM team. (We are) looking forward to a massive game against Regis here on Sunday."

CSU Pueblo (8-2-1, 2-0-1 RMAC) welcomes Regis on Sunday for a RMAC battle starting at 3 p.m. at Gonzales Stadium.
