PUEBLO, Colo. (September 12, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer team picked up its first win of the young season on Sunday, defeating Fort Hays State 1-0 behind a goal scored from
Madison Jepperson (Sr., Cottonwood Heights, Utah) in the 54th minute to carry the ThunderWolves to victory.
CSU Pueblo posted nine shots and earned five corners in the match. Offensively, Jepperson led the team with three shots and
Litzy Serna (Sr., West Jordan, Utah) and
Cara Siegel (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) both notched two shots at the net.
Through the first half the Pack recorded three shots against eight by FHSU. In the final period, CSU Pueblo created numerous chances at the net and put up 9 shots in the half.
With the ball deep in Tigers territory, the ThunderWolves'
Faith Meredith (Jr., Cheyenne, Wyo.) kicked in a beauty of a pass in to the top of the box, allowing Jepperson to settle the ball and hit a shot that dribbled in to the lower 90, taking the 1-nil lead.
Over the final thirty minutes, CSU Pueblo's defense and midfielders played strong and contained the offensive attack from FHSU.
"Fort Hays is a quality team and our defense absorbed a lot of pressure to earn the clean sheet today. Our midfield three were outnumbered with Fort Hays' formation and they worked very well together today," said Pack Head Coach
Sierra Cardenas.
Pack goalkeeper
Nicole Genis (So., San Jose, Costa Rica) had a stellar match as she made save after save in both periods to preserve the shutout. Genis finished with four saves in the win.
"Nikky held strong in goal for us and really dominated her box today. Madi did an excellent job creating opportunities and finding the net when her moment came. I am proud of the effort and perseverance that we see in the group every day and I'm excited for what's to come!"
CSU Pueblo (1-3-0) remain at home for a rare-midweek nonconference match on Wednesday against Lubbock Christian. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
