Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Complete team effort carries ThunderWolves past Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (March 5, 2021) - In their first game in 483 days, Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer used a complete team effort on both side of the ball to get past Colorado Mesa 1-0 Friday, the season opener for both teams.

Litzy Serna (Sr., West Jordan, Utah) scored the game's only goal in the 84th minutes for the ThunderWolves. Serna fired a shot high and to the right, out of the reach of the CMU goalkeeper, scoring the first goal of the season.

Senior Cara Siegel (Pueblo, Colo.) led the team with four shots and three landing on frame.

In the first half, solid play from the Pack's back line helped to fend off the Mavericks eight shots in the period.

At intermission, CMU held a 8-4 shots lead.

In her first outing at goalkeeper for the Pack, Nicole Genis (So., San Jose, Costa Rica) was effective, making three saves on ten shots faced.

Head Coach Comments:
"After a long 16 months, it feels so good to be back on the field with this special group of young women. The team has been working hard in training the last few weeks and have shown a lot of progress in our ability to keep and move the ball, and in our defensive organization."
"The opportunity to compete against a strong Mesa team showed us where we have opportunities to continue to grow as a group, including our discipline and patience with the ball."
"Overall, I'm please with the effort and desire today and I'm excited for what's to come!"

CSU Pueblo (1-0) will return home and host UCCS Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
