ThunderWolves battle No. 13 Mines to 1-1 draw

GOLDEN, Colo. (March 28, 2021) - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer team faced its second ranked opponent Sunday in No. 13 Colorado School of Mines and left Stermole Soccer Stadium with a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods gainst the ranked Orediggers.

Litzy Serna (Sr., West Jordan, Utah) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season after connecting on a penalty kick in the 26th minute.

Mines took the lead just 42 seconds prior to the ThunderWolves taking the ball and drawing the penalty inside the box.

In the match, Mines outshot the Pack 18-8 and CSU Pueblo matched the Orediggers in corner attempts at six apiece.

Cara Siegel (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) led all players with four shots and one landing on goal.

Playing in their first extra time of the season, the ThunderWolves recorded one shot and created one corner kick opportunity.

Pack goalkeeper Nicole Genis (So., San Jose, Costa Rica) had a good outing as she made nine saves against 18 shots from Mines.

Coach Comments
"I am extremely proud of the effort and execution from the team today. We put together a very strong performance against a quality opponent in Mines," said Pack Head Coach Sierra Cardenas. "Mines put us under constant defensive pressure from the start, and we remained composed and disciplined in our passing and teamwork to move the ball up the pitch."

"Defensively, the team executed the game plan and worked hard together to hunt down the ball and close down space. We also held a slight edge in possession in the match 51% to 49%. Overall, today's performance showed us how far we've come as a group, and left us hungry for more!."

CSU Pueblo (3-1-1, 1-0-1 RMAC) returns home and will wrap the home portion of its schedule Saturday against Fort Lewis. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
