DURANGO, Colo. (March 28, 2021) - Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer played Fort Lewis College to a 1-1 (2OT) draw Sunday at Dirks Field. The Pack's
Joe O'Sullivan (Sr., Deltona, Fla.) netted his second goal of the season after only 3:35 time had elapsed in the match for the ThunderWolves.
O'Sullivan broke free from the defense and hit a one-timer past the Skyhawks goalkeeper for the early score.
Dominik Huetgens (Jr., Halstenbek, Germany) was credited with an assist as he served the ball in to O'Sullivan.
In the match, CSU Pueblo outshot Fort Lewis by a 19-16 clip with seven of the Pack's shots landing on frame.
Louis Kearns (So., Liverpool, England) led all players with six shots and three on goal.
Miguel De Leon Jr. (Deltona, Fla.) finished the match with three shots.
In the first half, CSU Pueblo played with the high intensity in the first 45 minutes and allowed FLC only three shots in the period.
During the second half, the Pack initially played with the same energy from the first period despite FLC managing eight shots in the half.
In the 79th minute, FLC drove the ball down the right side of the pitch and connected on a goal to tie the game at 1-1 with just over ten minutes of play remaining.
The Pack managed a flurry of shots in the waning minutes but was unable to score.
In their first overtime of the season, CSU Pueblo created five chances at the net against one for the Skyhawks.
With about 7:24 left in the first overtime, Pack goalkeeper
Joseph Banul (Jr., Richardson, Tex.) made the biggest save of the seven in the game when FLC found possession at the top right side of the box and Banul stepped up and defended the shot and another blocked attempt was fended off by the Pack back line.Â
Entering the final extra period, FLC outshot the Pack 3-1 but again the strong play at the net from Banul preserved the tie. With 1:27 remaining, Banul faced another wide open shot from FLC that above the defense and Banul knocked it out.
Coach Comments
"The lads competed well and created a lot of chances. We are disappointed not to win the game, but FLC is a good team and not an easy place to come to play," said Pack Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "We continue to grow as a team and we'll learn from this one."
CSU Pueblo (4-0-1, 2-0-1 RMAC) returns home and will wrap the home portion of the schedule Saturday versus Mines. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
