42 Unanswered Points Lift Pack to Victory Over Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. (Oct. 9, 2021) – The (RV) Colorado State University Pueblo football team (4-2, 4-0) scored 42 unanswered points to lift the team to their fourth straight win over Chadron State (2-4, 2-3) Saturday afternoon.

The day did not start in CSU Pueblo's favor. Chadron State was able to make quick drives early and turn two out of its first three drives into points with the outlier being a missed field goal. The Pack found themselves trailing 10-0 with 13 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The ThunderWolves then came alive on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Devin Williams took the start under center and drove the Pack down field after starting with the ball at the CSU Pueblo 20. Williams connected with Nick Bingham for a three-yard touchdown pass to put the Pack within striking distance.

The Bingham touchdown marked his first of the 2021 campaign and his first career receiving touchdown.

The Pack then made the Eagles make mistakes. First, the hosts fumbled the ensuing kickoff and then went three-and-out in their next possession.

With the clock down to under a minute in the first half, the Thunderwolves were looking to shift the tides. With the start of the drive beginning at their own 15, Williams and the Pack were looking for a big play. After inching up the field, Williams aimed long and found Max Fine downfield. Fine evaded defenders and sprinted into the end zone off a 54-yard pass from Williams to put the Pack ahead 14-10 with only nine seconds remaining in the half.

Williams threw 14-18 in the opening half for 141 yards to mark the most first half passing yards for a Pack quarterback this season.

Coming out of halftime, the CSU Pueblo defense took over. In Chadron State's first drive, linebacker Patrick Howell leapt into the passing zone and snagged an interception. Howell waltzed 23 yards to the end zone to tally the Pack's third pick-six of the season and expand the lead to 21-10 following Dean Faithfull's extra point.

Just two plays later, Marcus Lawrence did his part and snagged an interception from the Chadron State offense. Although no points were scored in the ensuing drive, the Pack were clicking and not relenting.

The next Eagles offensive play saw the Pack linebackers wreak havoc again. Trevor Philio aggressively stripped the Chadron State running back of the ball, as Max Gonzales fell on it for the recovery.

It only took one play for Michael Roots to run around the left-side and cross the goal line for his first score of the afternoon. The Pack took a handsome 28-10 lead with 7:46 remaining in the quarter.
The Pack defense stood tall again and forced a quick drive from the Eagles. In the ensuing possession, Williams riddled the defense with a 15-yard pass to Preston Guerra and a 20-yard touchdown pass to Roots.

Philio halted the Eagles offense on fourth down in the next drive and got the ball back for the Pack offense at their own 44.

In the second play of the drive, Roots exploded out of the backfield. The running back burst through the middle of the Eagles' line and sprinted past the secondary to lead to his third total score of the day off a 56-yard touchdown run. The touchdown marked his third of the quarter and gave the Pack a comfortable 42-10 lead after tallying 42 unanswered points.

Sam Warren prevented an Eagles touchdown early in the fourth with another interception for the Pack efforts.

Later on, the Eagles found their way to the end zone for one more touchdown, but the Pack were too dominating. The CSU Pueblo offense held the ball for the final 8:23 of the game to ice the dominant 42-17 road victory.

The 28-point third quarter is the most points scored in a quarter all year for the Pack.

Williams dropped 219 yards on the afternoon to mark the most passing yards by a ThunderWolves quarterback this season. His three passing touchdowns marks a career high for the senior transfer. Williams connected with nine different receivers in the domineering performance.

Roots finished the day with 136 yards on the ground and 37 receiving to mark a season-high in total yards. His two touchdowns on the ground tied a season-high while his three total marked a season-best.

Wide receiver Nick Williams was Devin Williams' favorite target on the day as he led with 57 yards and eight receptions. Fine, Roots, and Bingham tallied the receiving touchdowns on the day.

The Pack defense was around the ball all day with Warren, Howell, and Lawrence accounting for the three interceptions. Ikenna Onwuasoanya tallied the lone sack on the day while Gonzales led the team with two tackles for loss.

The Pack take their 4-0 RMAC record into next week when they hit the road again to take on New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M. at 1 p.m. on Oct. 18.
