PUEBLO, Colo. (October 24, 2021) - Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer earned a big Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over Colorado Christian 3-2, Sunday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
The ThunderWolves received scores from
Vinzent Zingel (So., Aachen, Germany),
Martin Cardenas (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) and
Carlos Sanchis (Grad., Madrid, Spain).
Starting the match, both teams played with high intensity from the onset. The ThunderWolves offense played a balanced attack and totaled 15 shots in the game including eight in the first half.
Nazar Deputat (Sr., Ocala, Fla.) led all players with four shots.
Colorado Christian scored first during the 16th minute and the ThunderWolves responded in the 34th minute when Zingel received a pass from
Carlos Espinoza (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif.) and was able to create the space needed and fired a shot through a crowd at the net and earned his sixth goal of the season.
Less than ten minutes later, Cardenas took a pass ahead from
Nick Burgess (Sr., Melbourne, Fla.) and was able to finish for his first goal of the season.
At the break, CSU Pueblo held the 2-1 lead and was ahead in the shots category by a 8-3 clip.
In the final period, the Pack extended their lead during the 63rd minute when Sanchis took a rebounded shot from Deputa and struck the lower third of the net for a 3-1 lead.
The Cougars inched closer after scoring a goal in the 69th minute.
Over the final twenty minutes, the ThunderWolves play at midfield and the effort put forth from the defense helped to keep the Cougars from scoring.
Pack goalkeeper
Garret Wild (Jr., Brownsville, Tex.) faced six shots and no shots on goal.
"Really proud of everyone's effort today," said CSU Pueblo Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "We battled back from a goal down showing a lot of character.
Martin Cardenas was immense today and deserves a lot of credit for his performance defensively and getting us the 2nd goal."
"We had some great moments of quality from Nazar, Vinny and both Carlos' to get us back on top. They (CCU) are a very difficult team to play against and we had to fight all the way."

CSU Pueblo (11-4-1, 4-3-1 RMAC) will close out the home portion of the regular season with one final match at Gonzales Stadium on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against UCCS.
