Pack bats quieted by Roadrunner pitching in 2-1 loss

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 8, 2020) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball could not overcome a strong pitching performance by Metro State University Denver as the Pack dropped their series finale with the Roadrunners 2-1 Sunday at Rawlings Field.

DeVaughn Gales (Jr., Magnolia, Ark.) reached base twice in two plate appearances. Gales tripled and scored the Pack's lone run of the day. He also drew a walk.

However, the Pack could not muster much offense against MSU Denver starter, Cade Crader. Crader threw a complete game, giving up just three hits and a walk through nine innings. He struck out nine ThunderWolves.

Matt Goytia (Sr., La Puente, Calif.) took a hard-luck loss in his first start. Goytia gave up two unearned runs in 3.2 innings.  He struck out two.

The Pack bullpen delivered once again. JC Hatch (Sr., Corona, Calif.), Brett Matthews (Sr., Queen Creek, Ariz.), and Johnathan Ramirez (R-Jr., Henderson, Colo.) pitched 5.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Pack scored the game's first run in the first inning. Gales tripled. He scored on a Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) ground out to put the Pack up 1-0.

The Roadrunners tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the second. They took the lead on a catcher's interference call in the fourth.

The Pack's best chance came in the eighth. Billy Reyes (R-Sr., Yucaipa, Calif.) doubled with two outs, but the Pack could not bring home the tying run. Easton Adler (Sr., Mead, Colo.) had the Pack's third hit in the ninth, but Crader wrapped up the complete game.

Following a split in their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series, the Pack stands 2-2 in RMAC play and 10-6 overall. The Roadrunners improved to 7-11.

The ThunderWolves will begin an eight-game road trip with a visit to Regis University. This four-game series between the Pack and Rangers Friday March 13 at 3 p.m.
