PUEBLO, Colo. (March 1, 2020) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team was swept Sunday on the last day of four-game series set against Colorado Mesa.
The Pack dropped game one, 11-3 (5 inn.) and fell 4-2 in the series finale.
On the day,
Melissa Torrez (So., Buena Park, Calif.) recorded three hits, including a double in the two games.
In the first game, Colorado Mesa erupted early for eleven runs through the first three innings. The Pack scored three runs in their half of the fourth, taking advantage of two walks including one with the bases loaded.
Kaitlyn Glaze (Jr., Erie, Colo.) and
Gabby Moreno (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned RBIs in the frame.
The Pack were retired in order in the next inning and lost the run-ruled game 11-3 after five complete.
The series finale, CSU-Pueblo played toe-to-toe with the Mavericks. ThunderWolves starting pitcher
Samantha Riesen (Sr., Independence, Calif.) had an effective outing, holding the Mavericks to one hit through three innings and five total in the game.
CMU broke the tie in the fourth inning, as two errors by the Pack defense allowed one run to cross for the Mavericks.
Down 1-0 in the seventh inning, Riesen continued in the circle and tallied two quick outs before back-to-back doubles plated a run. The next batter for the Mavericks, AnnMarie Torres stepped in and hit a two-run homerun, her fourth of the series, building a 4-0 lead for CMU.
The ThunderWolves had scattered three hits through six innings before matching that number in the seventh inning. Singles by
Emma Flynn (Fr., Longmont, Colo.) and
Isabel Griego (So., Loveland, Colo.) would set up Moreno to step in and slam a triple down the right field line and score the runners.
Jessica Teller (So., Firestone, Colo.) had been called on to pinch run for Flynn.
With the tying run at the plate and one out, a groundout and strikeout ended the threat and game with a final score of 4-2 in favor of Mavericks.
