Seventh inning set back denies Pack’s sweep bid

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 9, 2020) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball took its first loss of the 2020 season, falling 7-3 to Emporia State University in Sunday's series finale at Rawlings Field.

Billy Reyes (R-Sr., Yucaipa, Calif.) went 3-for-4. Reyes scored two of the Pack's three runs.

Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) bashed a RBI double for his first extra base hit with the Pack. Gonzalez went 2-for-4.

Daniel Abilies (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz.) drove in two runs. After hitting a walk off single, Saturday night, Cody Beck (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Pack starter, Gunner Pickett (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) threw six innings for the Pack, striking out six Hornets. Pickett did not yield an earned run and only allowed three hits and a walk.

Both teams picked up an unearned run in the first inning. After the Hornets, scored a run on an error, the Pack answered in the bottom half. Beck and Reyes singled. Abiles drove in Beck on a ground out.

The Pack took the lead in the sixth. Abiles had another RBI groundout that plated Reyes and made it 2-1.

Emporia State erupted in the seventh with five consecutive hits. Those five runners all scored to give the Hornets a 6-2 lead.

In the bottom of  the eighth, Reyes led off with a single. Gonzalez followed with his hard-hit double to bring the Pack back within three. However, the ThunderWolves would strand the runner in scoring position.

The Hornets added a little insurance in the ninth, adding a run to make it 7-3. The Pack could not come back as the Hornets salvaged a win Sunday.

Despite the loss, the Pack still won the series 2-1 thanks to their double-header sweep Saturday.  The ThunderWolves will host a pod next weekend. They will begin this pod by playing Montana State University Billings at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
