Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pack knock off league-leading Yellow Jackets on last-second layup

SPEARFISH, S.D. (Feb. 7, 2020) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team stunned Black Hills State University Friday night by knocking off the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-leading Yellow Jackets on a last second layup to win, 68-67.

The ThunderWolves secured a lead halfway through the first half and didn't relinquish it until Black Hills State knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the game 64-64 with 1:38 remaining in regulation. On the ensuing possession, senior Jason Anderson (C, Colorado Springs, Colo.) battled for a layup and put the Pack back up, 66-64, with 1:06 left. CSU-Pueblo got the stop on the other end and had a chance to go ahead by two possessions, but a Bryce Sanchious (Jr., F, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) layup just rolled out and the home team had another opportunity.

The Pack kept the Yellow Jackets out of the paint and forced a long 3-point attempt, but unfortunately for the ThunderWolves, BHSU was able to hit the shot and with only six seconds remaining, CSU-Pueblo trailed by one, 66-65. Head Coach Matt Hammer called a timeout and drew up a play to hopefully take the lead.

Guard Tyson Gilbert (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) ended up getting the ball and he took it coast-to-coast, as the sophomore looked calm, cool and collected going to the rack and laying in the game-winning shot with one tick showing on the game clock. In desperation mode, the Yellow Jackets threw the in-bounds pass out of bounds to give the ball back to the Pack. CSU-Pueblo was able to successfully get the ball in play and kill the final second to celebrate the huge conference win.

BHSU (16-6, 13-3 RMAC) had won 13 straight and owned a 9-2 home record this season until the ThunderWolves (10-12, 7-8 RMAC) came in and spoiled the streak. CSU-Pueblo lost to BHSU, 94-76, at home just two weeks ago, but were able to cool the home team to just 46 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from long range. The Pack shot 46.3 percent from the field and knocked down 10-of-20 (50%) from long range.

Sanchious was again the leader of the Pack after leading the team in scoring on the road last weekend. He had 21 points with four 3-pointers and a 5-of-6 (83.3%) effort from the free throw line. He also added five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Anderson came off the bench and produced 15 points in 24 minutes of play. He shot 7-of-9 (77.8%) from the field and brought down four rebounds. Gilbert also came off the bench, but played in 36 minutes. He had 11 points, a team-high five assists and four rebounds.

Guard David Simental (R-So., Pueblo West, Colo.) added 12 points, three rebounds and two steals.

The Pack built a 12-point halftime lead by hitting eight 3-pointers and finished with 10 in the game. CSU-Pueblo had been struggling from long range and only once in the last six games had more than eight 3-pointers. The ThunderWolves led for 34:32 of game clock in the win.

Next, the Pack close a four-game road trip at South Dakota Mines and Technology, Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
