ThunderWolves put up fight against Colorado Mesa

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 29, 2020) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team dropped a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games Saturday against Colorado Mesa. The Pack fell 6-5 in game one and was tagged with a 7-2 loss in game two.

Marissa Piatt (Jr., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) led the offense, gathering three hits including hitting her second homerun in as many weeks for the Pack.

Piatt recorded three RBIs, six total bases and an .857 slugging percentage.

As a team, the ThunderWolves combined to get 14 hits and five total players recorded at least two hits.

In the series opener, the teams battled to a scoreless affair through three innings before the scoring began for the Pack.

During the home half of the fourth, CSU-Pueblo designated player Samantha Riesen (Sr., Independence, Calif.) led off the frame with a double down the left field line. She scored one out later on a RBI-single by Alyssa McWilliams (So., Windsor, Colo.).

Colorado Mesa would take a 2-1 lead in the fifth, scoring a pair of unearned runs.

The Pack responded in their next at bat, plating four runs on four hits. The big blow came thanks to a three-run blast hit by Piatt over the left field wall and a 5-2 lead through five.

The Mavericks would tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits in the sixth. CMU regained the lead for good in the final inning, scoring the go-ahead run with two outs.

CSU-Pueblo was retired in order over the last two innings, falling 6-5.

In game two, a five-run fifth inning proved as the difference maker for the visiting team.

CSU-Pueblo jumped ahead early and played small ball in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead after two complete.

The Mavericks evened the score during the fourth inning.

In the fifth, CMU would take the lead and the lead would balloon to a 6-1 deficit in favor of the Mavericks. CMU totaled five runs on three hits in the frame.

Kaitlyn Glaze (Jr., Erie, Colo.) tallied an RBI-single in the sixth to cut into the lead, putting hte Pack down by four runs going to the final inning.

CMU added a single run in the final at bat and the ThunderWolves were retired in order in the final inning of the game, as they fell 7-2.

CSU-Pueblo (1-15, 1-5 RMAC) will finish the series against Colorado Mesa with another twin bill Sunday. First pitch at Rawlings Softball Complex is set for 11 a.m.
