ThunderWolves tangle with Grizzlies in non-conference series

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 28, 2020)-  Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball will host Adams State University Saturday and Sunday in a two-game non-conference series at Rawlings Field.  Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m., while Sunday's series finale begins at 12 p.m.
 
The Pack enters the weekend on a three-game win streak. The ThunderWolves won their series against a Fort Hays State University squad that entered the series with a 9-3 record.
 
Pitching keyed the Pack's series victory over the Tigers. The ThunderWolves had a 1.69 ERA over their four games in Kansas. They held the Tigers scoreless in 27 of the 32 innings of the series (84.4 percent).
 
 CSU-Pueblo ranks 18th in D-II in strikeouts per nine innings.  The Pack strikes out an average of 11.3 batters per game, most in the RMAC.
 
Brett Matthews (Sr., Queen Creek, Ariz.) earned the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week award of his career. Matthews threw six shutout innings and struck out 12 Tigers.
 
In 9.1 innings pitched, Matthews has 18 strikeouts. He ranks 13th in D-II in K's per nine innings. Matthews shares seventh place in the RMAC in K's. Opponents are hitting just .125 against Matthews.
 
In addition to Matthews, Tim McIntyre  (Jr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.)  is coming off of a great start against the Tigers. McIntyre shutout the Tigers for 7.1 innings and struck out eight in a no decision Friday.
 
Gunner Pickett (Sr., Longmont, Colo.)  fanned 10 Tigers  in 5.2 innings of one-run ball Saturday. Pickett ranks fourth in the RMAC with a 2.35 ERA.
 
JC Hatch (Sr., Corona, Calif.) and Johnathan Ramirez (R-Jr., Henderson, Colo.) have anchored the Pack's bullpen. Hatch has a team-high seven appearances and picked up a win Sunday. Ramirez holds a 0.00 ERA and is holding opponents to a .148 batting average. In total, 12 Pack pitchers have an ERA under 5.00.
 
Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) will look to continue his momentum after hitting .500 against the Tigers with a .647 OBP. Gonzalez is now hitting .367 on the season.
 
Aidan Welch (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) leads the Pack with a .400 average. Dating back to last season, Welch has a hit in 17 of his last 18 games. He went 2-for-4 n each of his last three games. Welch clubbed his first home run of the season Sunday.
 
Daniel Abiles (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz.) and Ty Lewis (Jr., Pleasant Grove, Utah) share the team-lead with six RBIs. Abiles and Lewis both smacked their first homers of the season last weekend.
 
Scouting Adams State:
The Grizzlies hold a 4-8 record overall. They are already closing on last season's win total. Adams State went 9-41 in 2019.
 
The Pack beat the Grizzlies in six of the seven meetings between the two teams last season. CSU-Pueblo scored 124 runs in these seven games, an average of 17.7 runs per game.
 
Kolton Bleggi leads the Grizzlies with a .400 average. Cedrick Reynaud is hitting .368 with a home run and a team-best eight RBIs.
