PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 26, 2020) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's lacrosse team battled in the second half of a 17-11 loss to Davenport University Wednesday at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium, but a large halftime deficit proved to be costly for the ThunderWolves in the nonconference setback.
The second half score was 8-8 and the Panthers (3-1) only had a 9-8 advantage on the draw in the final 30 minutes, as the Pack (0-2) netted three woman-up goals. CSU-Pueblo won the last 10 minutes of the first half and first 20 minutes of the second by a score of 7-4. It was the first 20 minutes that doomed the home team, as the ThunderWolves fell behind 9-2 in that stretch.
In the end, the Pack totaled 30 ground balls to DU's 29. The ThunderWolves scored four woman-up goals.
Junior
Olivia Tener (M, Boise, Id.) netted a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Pack's offensive attack. She also picked up two ground balls and added a draw control and a caused a turnover.
Junior
Emily Eller (A, Keller, Texas) posted her second straight game with three goals. She also led the team with seven draw controls and added three ground balls with three caused turnovers.
Freshman
Gracie Anderson (M, Newberg, Ore.) not only produced her first collegiate goal, but finished the game with two goals on two shots on frame off the bench. Freshman
Caira Lessick (M, Oregon City, Ore.) also produced her first collegiate goal and two points in the game. She had a goal and an assist, while also leading the team with five ground balls.
Senior goalie
Ane Marie Horton (Long Beach, Calif.) collected 17 saves for the second straight game, as she faced 34 shots on goal.
Davenport scored the first two goals of the game seven and eight minutes into the contest to take a 2-0 lead, but the ThunderWolves responded with two goals to knot the contest at 2-2. Tener scored on a free position attempt with 20:21 left on the first half clock, then Lessick scored her first collegiate goal on a woman-up tally with 19:25 remaining.
DU scored the next seven goals, all within an eight-minute span to lead 9-2. The ThunderWovles held the Panthers scoreless for the final 10 minutes of the half and picked up a goal from Eller on an assist from Tener with five minutes left to trail 9-3 at the break.
CSU-Pueblo came out attacking in the second half and scored four of the first six goals to get within four at 11-7. Tener scored on the player advantage, Eller netted a goal and senior
Ali Doyle (A, Portland, Ore.) and sophomore
Ashley Hendricks (A, Hood River, Ore.) both scored.
Two goals by DU were countered by two woman-up goals by Eller and Anderson, as the Pack were back within four with 14:50 to play regulation.
Neither team scored for the next seven minutes, then the Panthers finished off the last eight minutes with a 4-2 advantage to secure the victory.
Next up for the ThunderWolves is a nonconference road trip to Indianapolis, Indiana. The Pack are scheduled to play No. 9 University of Indianapolis March 6 and then in a neutral site contest on March 8, CSU-Pueblo will battle Mckendree University.
