ThunderWolves fall on the road at MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. (Feb. 22, 2020) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team lost 64-57 at Metropolitan State University of Denver, Saturday in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game that closed the road season for the ThunderWolves.

Both teams struggled from the field, as the Pack (11-16, 9-12 RMAC) shot 33.9 percent and held the Roadrunners (11-16, 7-14 RMAC) to 35.9 percent. The Pack shot 25 percent from long range, while MSU Denver hit on 28.6 percent from long range. The home team won the rebounding battle 43-39. CSU-Pueblo had 12 turnovers, which equated into 16 points for the Roadrunners.

Freshman Jaedon Bowles (F, Aurora, Colo.) recorded his first-career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He hit three, 3-pointers and went 10-for-12 (83.3%) from the free throw line.

Sophomore guard Tyson Gilbert (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added 19 points and hit three, 3-pointers.

Trailing 13-10 with 11:14 to go in the first half, the Pack rattled off a 13-2 run to open up a 23-15 lead with 7:36 remaining. Senior Brandon McGhee (G, Oakland, Calif.) had six points in the run.

The first half lead reached nine before settling on six, 32-26, before the break.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, the ThunderWolves lost the lead, but battled back for a 45-41 advantage. CSU-Pueblo failed to score for the next four minutes and trailed 49-45 and only had two points for a six-minute stretch to fall behind, 57-47, with 4:11 to go.

The Pack battled back with a 6-0 run to get within four and 2:17 left in regulation, but that would be as close as the ThunderWolves would get in the seven-point loss.

Two of the top three scorers for the Pack missed their second straight game, as David Simental (R-So., G, Pueblo West, Colo.) and Bryce Sanchious (Jr., F, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) were sidelined.

CSU-Pueblo will conclude the season Feb. 28 at home against New Mexico Highlands University. The Pack will honor three seniors prior to the game for Senior Night. The contest is CSU-Pueblo Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night at Massari Arena and the Athletic Department will recognize student-athletes on the Dr. Dan Honor Roll for the fall semester. All faculty and staff will be free and get an additional four free tickets for immediate family. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
