PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 28, 2020) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team celebrated three seniors in the final game of the 2019-20 season, Friday at Massari Arena. The ThunderWolves lost the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game 91-68 to New Mexico Highlands University.
The Pack (11-17, 9-13 RMAC) honored seniors
Jason Anderson (C, Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Brandon McGhee (G, Oakland, Calif.) and
Donovan Oldham (F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) before the game. All three had big nights for the ThunderWolves.
Oldham led the team in scoring with 21 points, as he knocked down four 3-pointers. He also added six rebounds. He finished his career with 1,039 points and 440 rebounds.
McGhee totaled 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds. He was 50 percent from the field. He finished second on the team in scoring in his only season with the Pack.
Anderson posted a double-double in his final contest, as the center totaled 12 points and 11 rebounds (tied season-high). He was 4-of-5 (80%) from the field, went 3-for-3 from the free throw line and knocked down his only 3-point attempt. He added a block and a steal. The double-double was his third of the season. He closed his three-year career with the ThunderWolves with 758 points and 403 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Tyson Gilbert (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added 17 points.
NMHU (18-9, 13-9 RMAC) shot 57.4 percent from the field and 51.6 percent from 3-point land. The Cowboys hit 16 3-pointers. CSU-Pueblo shot 39.3 percent from the field and knocked down eight 3-pointers.
New Mexico Highlands had the lead for nearly the entire game. The Pack had a 9-7 advantage on an Oldham 3-pointer with 16:24 remaining, but a 6-0 run handed the lead to the road team, an advantage they wouldn't give up the rest of the way. The ThunderWolves trailed by as many as 19 in the first half before heading into the locker room trailing by 13, 48-35.
The ThunderWolves were down 10 at 61-51 with 12:54 left in regulation, but that would be as close as they would get in the 23-point loss
CSU-Pueblo finished the season 11-17 overall and 9-13 in RMAC play in Head Coach
Matt Hammer's first season. The ThunderWolves missed the postseason and finished in 11th in the league standings. The team's top scorer,
David Simental (R-So., G, Pueblo West, Colo.), missed the last four games due to injury, while the Pack's third leading scorer,
Bryce Sanchious (Jr., F, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was sidelined the final three games.
