CHADRON, Neb. (Feb. 21, 2020) – Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball senior
Donovan Oldham (F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored a season-high 26 points and surpassed 1,000 career points Friday in an 82-73 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road loss to Chadron State College.
Â
Oldham became the 24th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points. He was 10 shy of the century mark heading into the game and scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half to reach the milestone. He went 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the field, hit 5-of-10 (50%) from long range and went 3-for-4 (75%) from the free throw line. He also added six rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. He had zero turnovers in 34 minutes of play.Â
Â
The ThunderWolves (11-15, 9-11 RMAC) scored the first four points of the game, but after eight unanswered from the Eagles (4-22, 3-16 RMAC), never led the rest of the way. The Pack trailed by as many as 12 in the first half before settling on a seven-point deficit.Â
Â
CSU-Pueblo was within four at 42-38 on a sophomore guard
Tyson Gilbert (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) 3-pointer 3:11 into the second half. Then with 14:22 remaining, an Oldham dagger from downtown had the road team trailing by just two, 48-46.Â
Â
CSC was able to counter and build the lead back to 12, 67-55 with 6:28 remaining. CSU-Pueblo mounted another comeback in the next 1:16 of clock time and again an Oldham 3-pointer capped a run, as the ThunderWolves trailed 67-63 with five minutes to go.Â
Â
The deficit was still four, 72-68, after a senior
Brandon McGhee (G, Oakland, Calif.) free throw with 2:45 left in regulation, but that would be as close as the Pack would get in the nine point loss, 82-73.Â
Â
The ThunderWolves shot 50 percent from the field, but 16 turnovers equaled 23 Chadron State points. The Pack also struggled from the free throw line and went 13-for-21 (61.9%). The Eagles shot 48.3 percent from the field and hit 10 3-pointers with an 87.5 percent (14-for-16) effort from the charity stripe.Â
Â
McGhee totaled 21 points on 8-of-11 (72.7%) shooting from the field. He added five rebounds and three assists.Â
Â
Junior
Bendeguz Bonifert (Szeged, Hungry) came off the bench and scored 12 points, while Gilbert added 10 points and six rebounds.Â
Â
The ThunderWolves were without two of their top three scorers, as
David Simental (R-So., G, Pueblo West, Colo.) and
Bryce Sanchious (Jr., F, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) were both out.Â
Â
CSU-Pueblo will look to turn it around Saturday at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
