Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pack upset bid falls short versus No. 9 West Texas

PUEBLO, Colo. (September 5, 2019) - Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer began the 2019 campaign with upset on their mind with a revamped roster, ready to hit the ground running. The ThunderWolves opening weekend pitted them against a nationally ranked opponent in No. 9 West Texas A&M. The Buffs came away with a 3-1 victory at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

Pack freshman Vinzent Zingel (F, Aachen, Germany) tied the match at 1-1 after he scored his first collegiate goal and member of the Pack. During the 76', Zingel trailed during a breakaway up the center of the pitch and took a blocked shot and hit a one-timer in to the bottom third of the net and beyond the reach of the WTAMU goalkeeper to even the score.

In the first half, West Texas got on the board fairly early during the 12th minute on a ball that went past the defense, allowing the forward to strike the ball into the net.

The Pack took the one goal deficit into halftime but had recorded three shots and put up three corner kick attempts.

Following intermission, the home team fed off the large crowd at the pitch and became the more aggressive team.

Pack newcomer Carlos Espinoza (Jr., F, Simi Valley, Calif.) led all players with four shots, including two on goal.

After scoring the equalizer, the Buffs offense was sparked and they regained the lead with six minutes left in regulation on swift passing from just outside the box.

West Texas added a third goal with less than two minutes left on a penalty kick.

Pack goalkeeper Tyler Harvey (Sr., .Henderson, Nev.) made one save on eight shots by West Texas.

CSU-Pueblo (0-1-0) stays at home and will conclude opening weekend Sunday against another ranked opponent in No. 14 MSU Texas. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Gonzales Stadium.
