Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. (September 8, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team gave up the go-ahead goal with less than a minute to play in regulation, dropping a heartbreaker 2-1 against No. 14 Midwestern State University Texas, Sunday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
The Pack received a first half goal off the foot of
Dominik Huetgens (So., Halstenbek, Germany) who fired multiple shots that was initially blocked by the Mustang defense. The persistentance by Huetgens allowed him to get some space and place the shot in the lower third of the goal, beyond the reach of the Mustang goalkeeper.
MSU Texas scored the first goal in the match in the 21st minute on a unlucky bounce that scurried past the defense and landed just inside the far post for the early 1-0 lead.
Huetgens connected on his score in the 35th minute.
The remainder of the first half saw both teams exchange possession near midfield. At intermission, CSU-Pueblo led 7-3 in shots and had created three corner kick opportunities.
During the second period, the ThunderWolves continued to apply pressure against the MSU Texas defense.
Huetgens, along with
Fernando Herrera (Fr., Queretaro, Mexico) each registered a team high two shots.
In the 65th minute, the Mustangs' Patrick Fitzgerald was issued a second yellow caution which converted to a red card and he was removed from the game. From that point, the Pack played with a one-man advantage.
With the slight upper hand, the ThunderWolves kept possession deep in Mustang territory and had created several good looks at the net.
Following a turnover just beyond midfield, with a little more than one minute remaining, MSU Texas drove the ball up the field and drew a foul against the Pack. From the free kick about 30 yards out, the Mustang offense maneuvered within the box and the ball was played inside, landing at the foot of a Mustang player who chopped a shot just inside the left post and give the visitors a one goal lead.
Pack goalkeeper
Tyler Harvey (Sr., Henderson, Nev.) made one save and faced six shots by MSU Texas.
CSU-Pueblo (0-2-0) will go on the road for the first time this season and finish nonconference play at Newman on Thursday and conclude the weekend Saturday at Rogers State.
