RAPID CITY, S.D. (September 27, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team finished a stellar performance Friday, beating South Dakota Mines 6-1 behind a five-point performance by freshman
Vinzent Zingel (Aachen, Germany) and five other members of the Pack each tallied a goal in the win. The six goals marks the highest goal total for the Pack since the 2012 season.
Zingel scored in the 14' and 48', along with goals by
Cameron Campbell (Sr., Laramie, Wyo.),
Joe McKee (Sr., Plano, Tex.),
Kai Kokesh (R-Jr., Anchorage, Alaska), and
Louis Kearns (Fr., Liverpool, England) helped to put the match away early on.
In their best outing on both sides of the ball thus far, the ThunderWolves held SD Mines to zero shots in the first half while they fired 15 shots in the first period. At halftime, CSU-Pueblo held a 3-0 lead and had quickly deflated the home team momentum.
Starting the match, the Pack came out with a quick first step, and the offense was the first to any loose ball on the pitch. Less than one minute into the start of the game, CSU-Pueblo earned one of their seven corner kicks in the match and quickly got off two shots before Campbell connected in the 11th minute from a pass by Zingel.
Three minutes later, Zingel and Co. again drove the ball into SDMT territory and he hit a one-timer beyond the reach of the goalkeeper for a 2-nil lead.
The Pack controlled possession for majority of the half and was again rewarded for the hard work in the 41' when
Jose Suniaga (Sr., Anzoategui, Venezuela) dribbled the ball and fed a pass ahead to McKee who was running up the right sideline and booted in another score for the ThunderWolves.
Moments into the second half,
Richard Panknin (Jr., Sassnitz, Germany) pushed the ball ahead at midfield and drew the defense to him, allowing Zingel to lose his defender and receive a pass that he was able to finish, adding to the lead.
The Hardrockers avoided the shutout in the 60' but the Pack responded ten minutes later on a goal by Kokesh in the 70'.
Kearns ended the scoring in the 86' after taking pass and hitting a dribbler past the Hardrocker goalkeeper for the commanding five-goal lead.
Pack goalkeeper
Tyler Harvey (Sr., Henderson, Nev.) played fifty-five minutes and faced no shots between the frame.
Joseph Banul (So., Richardson, Tex.) saw his first action of the season and played thirty-five minutes and allowed one goal to the Hardrockers.
CSU-Pueblo (2-5-0, 2-1-0 RMAC) finishes the weekend at Colorado School of Mines, Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Stermole Stadium.
