Game Recap: Baseball |

Pack bested by No. 1 Mesa in DH loss

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 6, 2019) –  Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball could not capture a series win over No.1 ranked Colorado Mesa University as the Mavericks swept Saturday's doubleheader at Rawlings Field. The Pack dropped game one 10-4 and fell in the second game 5-2.

Gilbert Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) scored a run in each game for the Pack. The first baseman went 2-for-4 with a RBI in game one. Sauceda drew a walk in game two to tie Chase Lacomb with a school record 134 career walks.

The Pack fell behind early in game two as the Mavericks scored twice in the first inning. They added one run in the third to stake themselves to a 3-0 lead.

Sauceda got the Pack on the board in the third when he roped a RBI double that plated Jesse Holguin (Fr., Colton, Calif.).  Dakota Popham (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) drove in Sauceda with a RBI single that cut the Mavericks lead to 3-2. Popham went 2-for-4 in game one.

The Mavericks scored four runs in the fourth to chase Pack starter Josh Dahl (Sr., Glendale, Ariz.). Dahl, the RMAC's leader in strikeouts looking, did not get the called third strikes he needed to get out of innings. He took the loss in game one to fall to 4-3.

The Pack attempted to rally in the bottom of the fourth. Aidan Welch (So., Seattle, Wash.) swatted a double to drive in Rion Santamaria (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.)

Welch scored on a RBI groundout by Stone Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) to cut the Maverick lead to 7-4. However, the Pack could not any closer. The Mavericks scored three in the sixth as they took game one 10-4.

The Pack got off to a strong start in game two. Sauceda walked. Popham launched a triple into the right center field gap to drive in Sauceda and put the Pack on top 1-0. Popham came home on a Santamaria single to make it 2-0. Santamaria went 3-for-6 in the two games.

Brett Matthews (Jr., Queen Creek, Ariz.) cruised through the first five innings, holding the top ranked Mavericks scoreless. Mesa broke through in the sixth with two runs to tie the game.

Matthews allowed two runs in five innings. He struck out five. Andrew Coverly (Jr., Centennial, Colo.) entered with two men on in the sixth and got all three outs to keep the game tied through sixth.

In the top of the seventh, the Mavericks hit a three-run home run. That dinger propelled the Mavericks to a 5-2 win. Coverly took the loss as his record slipped to 1-2.

The Pack's record evened out at 16-16. They are 11-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Mavericks improved to 27-6 (15-4 RMAC).

CSU-Pueblo and Colorado Mesa will wrap up their four-game series Sunday when they meet at 12 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
