Box Score 2 GOLDEN, Colo. (April 26, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team picked up a much needed split in the first doubleheader Friday at Colorado School of Mines. The Pack dropped the first game 3-0 before scoring a come-from-behind victory, 4-3 in 9 innings in the nightcap at CSM Softball Field.
In game one,
Sabrina Felix (Jr., Corona, Calif.) hit a double with one out but was left stranded in the ThunderWolves top of the first inning. Mines took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat on a hit and error on the same play.
The ThunderWolves next best chance to score came in the fourth inning and with two outs,
Michaela Burpee (Sr., Union City, Calif.) and
Melissa Torrez (Fr., Buena Park, Calif.) each singled up the middle but a groundout in the next at-bat ended the scoring threat.
In the circle, Pack pitcher
Taylor Strupp (Fr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) lasted 2.1 innings and she allowed one earned run and finished with two strikeouts before
Hannah Anderson (R-Jr., Spokane, Wash.) came on in relief.
While on the mound, Anderson tossed 3.2 innings and gave up one run and allowed four hits. She fanned one batter and did not allow a walk.
With two outs in the sixth,
Marissa Piatt (So., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) drew a walk but was unable to advance following a foul out on the infield.
In the Pack's last at-bat, the first two batters reached safely before Mines pitcher Sydney Marchando retired the next three hitters to close out the 3-0 Mines victory.
Game two, Felix earned a two-out walk in the first inning and was left on base after a strikeout to end the frame.
The Orediggers broke the scoreless game in their first time on offense after loading the bases and a sac fly out plated the first run of the game.
CSU-Pueblo was held without a hit until the fifth when Burpee singled to center field to help the Pack avoid the no-hit bid.
The Orediggers scores two more runs in the fourth and built a 3-0 lead going to the back end of the game.
Down by three going to their final at-bat, the Pack's
Hailey Hicks (Jr., Meridian, Idaho) clubbed a two-run single through the left side of the infield to bring the Pack within one run, 3-2.
Later in the inning,
Morgan Hatfield (Sr., Upland, Calif.) connected a single up the middle to score the tying run from second base.
The ThunderWolves sent the game into extra innings after Pack hurler,
Samantha Riesen (Jr., Independence, Calif.) issued a walk with one out but retired the next two batters to get the Pack back on offense.
In the eighth, both teams had a base runner reach safely but was unable to score, setting up the ninth inning.
Starting off the ninth,
Alyssa McWilliams (Fr., Windsor, Colo.) led off with a sharp single up the middle and two outs on the infield, allowed her to move over to third base with two outs and leadoff hitter Moreno stepped up and hit a dribbler to the left side and she beat out the throw to first, allowing McWilliams to score the go-ahead run.
Holding the one-run lead, Riesen allowed a pair of hits in the frame before slamming the door on the Orediggers with a groundout to shortstop, giving the Pack the 4-3 win. Riesen improves her record to 4-8 on the season. She finished with 9.0 innings and gave up three earned runs.
CSU-Pueblo (13-27, 12-24 RMAC) will finish the series and the regular season Saturday with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at CSM Softball Field.
