PUEBLO, Colo. (April 19, 2019)- Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball traded wins with Adams State University in their doubleheader Saturday at the ASU Baseball Field. The Pack dropped game one 14-12 in extra innings but bounced back with an 11-7 in game two.
Dakota Popham (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) smacked two home runs in game two. Between the two games Popham had six hits in eight trips. The Pack's third baseman drove in six runs. He also walked twice.
Easton Adler (Jr., Mead, Colo.) scored seven runs Saturday. Adler went 3-for-3 with four runs scored in game one. He also stole three bases. Adler swatted his first career home run.
Gil Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) knocked in six runs between the two games. Sauceda finished 3-for-6 with three walks. He scored four runs. Sauceda bashed his second home run of the season in game two.
Aidan Welch (So., Seattle, Wash.) slugged a three-run home run in game one. This dinger gave Welch a home run in three straight games. This home run streak came to an end in game two.
The Pack scored the first run of the day when Popham drove in Adler with a base knock. The Grizzlies put up a run in both the first and second inning to take the lead. Three Pack runs put the Pack in front 4-2.
After Adams State scored one in the third, the Pack scored three more in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. The Pack's power shined in the sixth. Adler went deep with a solo shot. Welch mashed a three-run shot to put the Pack up 11-5.
The Grizzlies rallied with three runs in sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. The Pack scored a run in the eighth when
Talon Schaller (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.) drove in
Rion Santamaria (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) on a RBI groundout to give the Pack a 12-11 lead.
Adams State answered in the bottom of the eighth. The Grizzlies' Jared Gay hit a three-run home run to give Adams State 14-12 walk off win.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning of game two. Sauceda gave the Pack the lead with a three-run home run. Popham followed with a solo shot. The back-to-back home runs put the Pack up 6-2.
Welch drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but the Grizzlies trimmed the pack's lead to 7-5. Sauceda swatted a RBI single in the fifth. Popham followed with a three-run home run that gave the pack an 11-5 lead.
Brett Matthews (Jr., Queen Creek, Ariz.) shut the door on the Grizzlies as the Pack held on for an 11-7 win. Matthews earned the win to improve to 3-2.
After the DH split, the Pack stands 19-21 overall. They are 14-13 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
The Pack and Grizzlies will wrap up this four-game series Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
