PUEBLO, Colo. (April 1, 2019) – Sophomore
Marissa Piatt (3B, San Luis Obispo, Calif.) drove a single into center field and senior
Jordan Sheard (Broomfield, Colo.) came around to score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to hand the Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team a 5-4 win against Colorado Christian University, Monday at the Rawlings Softball Complex.
The win came in game one of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Pack (6-20, 5-17 RMAC) lost game two to the Cougars (24-9, 17-3 RMAC) by the score of 5-0.
In game one, senior catcher
Michaela Burpee (Union City, Calif.) got the ThunderWolves on the board right away in the first when she sent her sixth home run of the season over the left field fence to score both
Sabrina Felix (Jr., OF, Corona, Calif.) and Piatt to give the home team a 3-0 advantage.
The score remained 3-0 until CCU scored twice in the fourth. The ThunderWolves put up an insurance run in the sixth when Burpee came around to score. She led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then gave CSU-Pueblo a 4-2 lead on a sophomore
Karlee Salas (Util., Pueblo, Colo.) RBI ground out.
The extra run proved important, as the Cougars scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game and eventually force extra innings. Colorado Christian left three on base and the Pack stranded two in the eighth and ninth combined.
After a 1-2-3 top half of the 10th, Sheard singled to left to leadoff and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Felix. Piatt then played hero with a solid rake up the middle to plate Sheard and the Pack bench emptied in celebration.
Piatt went 3-for-5 in the game with a run and the game-winning RBI. She had one double. Burpee finished with a 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs and two runs scored. She also had a double and was hit by a pitch.
Freshman
Taylor Strupp (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) pitched the last 3.1 innings and didn't allow a run. She picked up her third win of the season and allowed three hits with two strikeouts.
CSU-Pueblo totaled nine hits in the win, while the Cougars produced 13 hits and left 12 runners on base.
In game two, the Cougars scored one in the first, two in the second and single runs in the fourth and fifth to win 5-0.
The ThunderWolves had four hits in the game with one coming from Piatt. CSU-Pueblo used three pitchers in the loss, while Strupp started and allowed three runs on three hits to take the loss.
Next up is a four-game RMAC home series with Adams State University, April 6-7.
