Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. (April 6, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team earned two wins over Adams State Saturday at Rawlings Softball Complex to start a four-game set. The Pack won game one 6-3 and held on in game two for a 4-3 win.
On Cancer Awareness Day at the ball park, the ThunderWolves and Grizzlies welcomed Hudson Hribar to throw out the first pitch. Hribar is 9-years old and has been battling Leukemia for the last two years. He was born with down syndrom and underwent surgery to repair his heart at only a few months old.
In honor of childhood cancer, the ThunderWolves wore yellow jerseys and Adams State donned teal jerseys in support of prostate cancer.
Sabrina Felix (Jr., Corona, Calif.) led the team with four hits and three RBIs on the day. Three Pack players,
Gabby Moreno (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.),
Marissa Piatt (So., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and
Jordan Sheard (Sr., Broomfield, Colo.) each finished with three hits in the twin bill.
In game one the ThunderWolves put up three runs in their first two times on offense. The first two batters in Moreno and Sheard each scored in the opening frame and in the second inning, Moreno hit a two-out single and she would score on a double by Sheard.
The Grizzlies avoided the shutout and scored one run in the fourth and it was quickly matched by the ThunderWolves. In their half of the fifth, CSU-Pueblo slugged four hits and took advantage of a defensive error and build a 6-1 lead.
In their last chance to tie the game, ASU scored two runs and had the tying run come to bat but a line out to third ended the game and a 6-3 Pack win.
Pack hurler
Taylor Strupp (Fr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) limited the Grizzlies and had little threat while in the circle. Strupp gave up three runs and nine hits to improve her record to 4-11 on the year. Strupp left nine runners stranded.
In the nightcap, it was Adams that jumped ahead 1-0 after the first. The ThunderWolves was held without a hit until the third inning and they would even the score during the bottom of the fourth inning. Felix led-off the frame with a single and got into scoring position on a passed ball. Piatt smashed a double down the right field line to get the Pack on the board.
After retiring the side in order in the fifth, the Pack got back on offense and took the lead 3-1 after two runs scored on three hits. With two outs, Felix stepped up and hit a laser into the gap, allowing two runs to score.Â
In the circle for the Pack,
Samantha Riesen (Sr., Independence, Calif.) was coasting for much of the game until ASU put runners on base in the sixth and
Hannah Anderson (Jr., Spokane, Wash.) was called on in relief and Anderson shut the door on the scoring threat in the sixth.
Riesen finished with 5.0 innings pitched and she allowed two runs while scattering eight hits and improves to 3-5 this season.
The teams exchanged single runs during the sixth inning. The Pack's run came on a sac-squeeze bunt that was executed to perfection. Heading to the final inning, the Pack held a two-run lead.
In the seventh, Adams did not go down without a fight and scored one run while getting the tying run on base. After a double that was hit, a heads up defensive play by Pack shortstop
Isabel Griego (Fr., Loveland, Colo.) who quickly picked up a ground ball and threw a perfect ball to get the runner out at third.
Anderson was credited with a save after throwing 2.0 innings and allowed one unearned run to score.
CSU-Pueblo (8-20, 7-17 RMAC) will go for the sweep when they battle Adams Sunday in another twin bill starting at 11 a.m. at Rawlings Softball Complex.
