GREELEY, Colo. (March 19, 2019) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball was upended by Division I opponent University of Northern Colorado Tuesday. The Bears won by run-rule in eighth inning by a score of 17-7 at Jackson Field.
Adrian Martinez (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) finished 2-for-3. Martinez mashed a RBI double. He also scored a run.
Daniel Abiles (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) collected two hits in four trips. Abiles slugged his first double of the season. The catcher scored and drove in a run.
Dakota Popham (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) reached base four times. Popham went 1-for-2 with a run scored. He drew three walks.
Rion Santamaria (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) and
Gilbert Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) each went 1-for-3. Santamaria drew two walks. Sauceda walked once. They each scored a run.
The Bears got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a Pack error. The Pack returned the favor in the fourth when
Kodee Martin (Jr., Platte County, Mo.) scored on a Sauceda fielder's choice to tie it at one.
In the fourth inning, the Bears scored four runs to take a 5-1 lead. They chased Pack starter Chris Douglas (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.). Douglas took the loss, despite not allowing an earned run.
The Pack put up one run in the fifth when Aidan Welch (So., Seattle, Wash.) drove in JP Hopkins (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.) on a sacrifice fly. The Bears quickly answered with five runs in their half of the fifth.
Martinez knocked in Talon Schaller (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.) with a double in the sixth. The Pack scored two runs in the seventh on a pair of groundouts to cut the Bears lead to 10-5.
After the Bears scored three runs in the seventh, the Pack put up a two-spot in the eighth. Abiles slugged a double that plated Martinez. He scored when Zac Hanenberg (Fr., Cañon City, Colo.) was hit by a pitch to make it 13-7.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bears scored four runs to end the game via run rule. CSU-Pueblo now stands 10-11 on the year. The Pack will return to D-II competition Friday when they host Colorado Christian University at 6 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
